Thanks TMT, you've got me interested in the off board DAC option and Sound Blaster certainly had a good reputation the last time I was looking to buy pc components. And this one is in my price range

...Has anybody any recommendation for a DAC if I end up going that way. From the components above you can probably see that I'm building a middle ish spec pc but as I want decent sound I'll probably pay more than a middle ish DAC would normally cost.

I've no knowledge whatsoever about DAC's but a quick Google gives this as a decent starting point maybe with every price point covered (up to a few grand, yikes!):-

Even just on there they've got the Chord Hugo TT2 at 4 grand. Is that outside of your budget? ;)

Fiio offer some quality external DAC/AMP options mate and brilliant prices and reviews on what Hi-FI are always very very good.

I have a E07K Andes i bought back in 2013 after a brilliant review and got it for £70 and its still going strong and paired with my Sennheiser HD540 and my phone it delivers superb sound quality and volume and really drives a quality pair of headphones.

Newer models are now available.

Built the pc over Christmas and I'm happy with the sound from the motherboard for now. Thanks for the advice everybody
