Can any of you audiophiles out there recommend a relatively cheap sound bar that won't be crap? say around £50 like the hitatchi argos have at the minute (half price). Or is it worth me spending a few quid more, if so besides the obvious like more power and more detailed sound what will a few quid more get me?

Well, thanks to you lot not advising me on cheap shit I panicked and bought this...

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd-blu-ray/dvd-blu-ray-home-cinema/home-cinema-systems/samsung-hw-f450-soundbar-21295587-pdt.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd-blu ... 7-pdt.html</a>

Still, its good and as far as the Mrs knows it cost 50 quid...

I can recommend the Sony sounbars.
Go for one with a seperate sub woofer (preferably bluetooth and not wired) as you can place anywhere in the room

You can pick up a Sony HT CT60 for around £90 if you shop around however this a 60w output device.
If you can stretch your budget a little and are patient you really can get a serious bang for your buck!

I got a Sony HT CT260 - bluetooth sub woofer - total output of 300w of ebay for £147.00 about 3 weeks ago
and that in my opinion is a very serious bargain. List price is circa £330 (but you can pick them up at arounf £280)
It was a sale by Curry's Direct who had 4 of them and they were snapped up. But similar offers do appear from time to time.
The sound is truly amazing - genuine cinema style sound in your home . It really does shake the walls!
If you get a bluetooth soundbar then you can then play any of your music from your mobile or tablet thru it also - a big plus.
New models are coming out all of the time so they try and flog of the ones they have in stock on ebay and also Littlewoods Clearance Depot
at much reduced prices and remember whatever you buy will be out date within 6 months so don't worry about it.
Good luck.

Have a look at Richer Sounds as they have a good selection and the staff are very helpful.
