Had a brunch this morning so just watched the match in full and I am admittedly confused by Pep’s setup in the first half.
It was odd that he would start with no wingers knowing full well Soton was very likely going to park the bus. Nothing against Gvardiol or Lewis, they did fine, but neither can really provide width with thrust, and our entire attacking setup, if you can really call it that, in the first half just played in to their tactics.
We looked much more threatening when Doku came on, with a bit less defensive coherence, but that is the trade off required to actually try to win matches these days.
I am probably missing something, though, as Pep was very frustrated in the first half despite what I thought was a fairly predictable outcome, and he obviously knows infinitely more about football and what he wants out of the lads than me.
His choices just seem strange at present, both in some of starting selections and tactics and some of his subs in matches. I personally thought Haaland was very sluggish this afternoon, which is expected coming back from injury, and he was largely ineffective against Soton’s low block, anyway. I would have thought we would have gone in to the match with a plan to take him off for Marmoush at 60 minutes, both to ease him back and to change tactics (giving Soton something new to defend).
Perhaps I am just being very harsh and I am usually much more positive. But it was honestly a slog to watch us today.
I am feeling slightly poorly at the moment, though, so maybe it was more that than our performance.
That said, I reckon this will light a fire with Pep and the players and we’ll play with far more intent and drive in the final, and finish the last two matches more strongly.
Up the blues!
