Southampton (H) | PL | Post-Match Thread

A dull watch that one. It was a bit too easy and we were pedestrian, for large parts. Manuel and Dias were continually free, in space, but were very, very conservative in their approach, so opportunities were not created that could have been. A good first half by Nunes, and another excellent performance from Gvardiol. We are missing the creativity of KDB, Rodri, and Bobb, allied to yet more injuries with Grealish and Doku. In that sense, any win is very welcome.

My son has done an average position of the ball heatmap for this game.

Southampton deserve some praise too, that wasn't a typical 11 men behind the ball type performance. They actually pressed at times and at moments played through our press easily.

Difficult while teams come and make it a frustrating game, and they say it’s us that’s ruining the game. Basically 21 players in or around the 18 yard box.
To be fair to teams at the bottom, they are allowed to stack the box. They have come for one thing as a maximum, and that's a draw.
It's the teams like Arsenal who should have more courage in their play. They are the ones ripping off spectators.

Happy with the 3 pts.

not sure we can do much more than we are doing at present with injuries and also the way teams are setting up ...I know teams have been doing it for the past few seasons but its actually now 10 outfield players inside the 18yd box where as it used to be 10 outfield players inside their own half....

Pep really has destroyed this league and long may it continue

Tough to watch at times especially in the second half. We need to put more of our chances away as it felt as though we were hanging on a bit at the end even though they didn't create much.
They moved the ball about well but our lack of a cutting edge was disappointing. Haaland looked shattered at the end.

At times and briefly - Im not sure they deserve that much credit at all ....even in the last 10 minutes they werent trying that hard to come out

We are down to the bare bones so any win will do , stop mithering

Next
'Bare bones' ? That's embarrassing, we had a very strong team, and brought on Gundo and Stones, who would walk straight into 99% of the other teams.
As Mr Clough once said..."if your losing and then start drawing, they're not happy because you're not winning, and if you start winning 1-0, they're then not happy because you're not winning 3-0"
We won, doesn't matter how, it's 3pts...and as they say after any manager is sacked "it's a results business" ;)

You're kidding right ? they were wasting time with 10 minutes to go, they only pressed very rarely and were mostly camped in their own box.

I like Nunes I really do but he isn’t consistent in his overall game. Did a few stray balls when passing to our players and not seen (today) how he will improve. Not a good one game makes a great player. When gundogan came on for him at the end I was thinking a 34 yrs coming on for him says it all.

Said weeks ago selling alverez and not getting someone else in will more than likely come to bite us on the arse at some point

Not a sole in our current squad can step into that position and keep things ticking along with goals
So true. And if we lose Kovacic before Jan 1st we are in the long grass too. Love him but Txixi had a lazy summer in my view :- )

A win is a win. I hate the criticism for us supposedly playing crap by not scoring shedloads against teams who put 11 in the box, and pray for a breakaway goal.

it is NOT us that makes these games a tough watch. What the hell are you supposed to do? The fact we can keep winning these games at all is bloody impressive.
There is some truth to what you say but the opposition sticking XI behind the ball against us isn’t new. Teams have done this for years but we would regularly have the game won after 20 mins. We are nowhere near as effective in the final 3rd as we used to be.
