Southampton (N) | FAC | Post Match Thread

We absolutely smashed them to pieces. The issue is that too many are happy to go side to side. Like we’re playing the rondo without putting it in the net.

Pep has to sort that out. He’s set them up so well to dominate the game but it’s not good enough to hit the front man or miss passes and crosses or to not shoot when the chance is there.

We were unbelievably good today up until the box today. One of the most dominant games I’ve seen us play for a long time.

We have to find a way to score more goals
Why?

First half we were shite and Southampton defended well. Second half we created a bit and Southampton defended well.
Then the subs came on. They scored a worldy, we equalised then scored a worldy of our own and we then made a pig's arse out of a couple of great chances and then we came home.
Other notes: Wembley sponsored by EE. So how come there is no WiFi in the stadium?
How come we have songs with about 200 words yet Southampton manage with "Yellow, yellow, yellow"?
And it's back again in three weeks time.

A heavily rotated squad consisting of players with not many minutes playing like a heavily rotated squad consisting of players with not many minutes.

Really good second half tbf, most important is the win and the rest afforded to the majority of the first 11.

Lovely day out in the sunshine and managed to find some playing fields near the stadium with lots of shade and green green grass to relax in before KO. Wembley is a horrible heat box and I have an irrational loathing of teams playing in yellow.

I felt a bit nervous when I saw the team sheet as so many changes That narrow attack with wingbacks hadn't worked that well earlier in the season and I worried Ake and Stones might lack pace at the back .

No surprises from a well drilled Southampton side and we seem to only really want to go full throttle after half time . Thought we were bound to score but then they broke and scored a fabulous goal but then so did we for the winner . Those last 15 minutes were bonkers . So happy for Nico G, who would start for most PL sides but has of course to step down for Rodri .

Back to Wembley in three weeks and maybe again in five (if City women beat Chelsea ). Never thought we'd be anywhere close to competing for a domestic treble after last season .

A few lads out there who Pep will be eager to get out the door in the summer after that.

Reijnders, Marmoush, Savinho - they just haven't got the stones for big games have they.

Responded well though to Southampton's goal - two moments of calm from distance.

Overall performance was fine, we just had shirkers up front who were missing chances and passing the responsibility on to someone else at all times.

Pep loved Reijnders today. He's not going anywhere unless he wants out.

Shame to say, but I think phil is finished at city
So sad, I went through a bit of trauma in 2019, (no different than most people experience in their lifetime), one thing I looked forward to was watching our Phil develop. He was such a prospect, he became such a great player, imposing himself on the opposition, that early goal against the Hammers last game of the 2024 season to win the league was a prime example of his influence.

He’s a shadow of that player at the moment, I hope a summer off and a reset will get him back to the Phil we all know and love, it can happen.

I think the point that many have missed is that they come in and do a job. Sometimes it's not quite enough and we have to bring in the big guns to finish it off, but those players did enough to keep us in the tie and collectively got us through.

A lot are quick to criticise and somehow forget that we won the match. That's the whole point of the exercise isn't it?

We got 8 players rested and got to the final again, yet a certain contingent don't seem to be happy unless they have the opportunity to have a moan.

Even after a good win some are complaining, there were a few after we beat Liverpool 4-0 in he last round. When was the last time we beat Liverpool 4-0? I don't know why they bother at all sometimes.
We did beat them 5-0 in 2017 so you’re technically correct! As you say, we can’t complain, even if we just end up with the Carabao cup for me it will still be a very good season.

Us FOC’s would have killed for a trophy after 76, 35 years later to win another.

It’s never been so brilliant to be a Blue.

Can't stress how important that result was to our season as a whole. Had we lost, it could have easily had a knock-on effect on our league form, especially since the the Tarquin's managed another scruffy 1-0 to go back top.
Without a doubt, the anxiety amongst Arteta’s team is palpable, we’ve got 8 days off, bang in the race to win another trophy or two.

To be fair to Pep and the team he picked they did okay. Our first eleven would have had the same problems breaking Southampton down as they did the way they were set up. The majority got a rest until the last few minutes when they came on and turned the tide as Southampton tired.
We now have over a week to rest and recuperate before the final push. One trophy in the cabinet, into another final and with a chance to win the league, although the latter will be tough. Happy days.

Pep made the number of changes that I did not want, and I was worried about the lack of pace in the back four. As the game progressed, I was thinking he has done a Beyer again. Thankfully his second half changes righted the ship, and we move on to claim yet another record.
He frustrates at times but overall has given us many, many fantastic memories.

I never really expected us to thump them. Their game plan was just to set up to give us very little room to break them down and take their chance they could hit us on the break. And that's fair enough, it's exactly what they should do, they can't go toe to toe.

Doesn't matter if we are a division apart. Put that many men behind the ball and it's not easy.

Certainly knew it would be disjointed when I saw the line up. How could it not be? Players who barely play, let alone with each other.

But it was a very successful day. We got through to the final without taking much out of the players who will play the league run in. That was the idea and it worked out that way.

If we start Doku every game he will break down. His game is based on explosive movement and he'll pick up muscle injuries when tired. Pep got it right. Keep him back and use if needed.

I agree about Doku - he needs to be protected as much as possible not only because of his explosiveness but because of the treatment he gets from opponents.
