Southport attacker pleads guilty to murdering three girls | Sentenced to 52 years in prison

How were the public misled? I genuinely can’t remember what would have been misleading.
I would think that the discovery of Ricin at his home, quite apart from the terror manual, seems incompatible with the repeated assurances that the police provided stating that there was nothing to suggest any terror link in the attack.

At the very least I would think that the Ricin issue would have led to an active investigation of a terror link, even if a terror link was not the main line of inquiry.

It feels to me like the obsession with categorizing this lad as (Islamic) terrorist/not terrorist, despite his very obvious violent fantasies, is in the soup for how he's fallen through the gaps of things like Prevent. So it's sad to see that continue to play out after the fact in the press and on these pages. There's some very alienated, very scary boys and young men who have a world of violence on the internet to seek out that will inevitably include Islamic State beheadings, school shootings, and far right violence (among other things). The expression of that violence is becoming more and more politically incoherent, and I just don't know how useful much of the obsession with terrorism is for addressing these problems unless they are very specifically for advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.

yet they never said any of what you are saying..

it was all investigated.

its called evidence and the full code test-it clearly didn't reach that threshold. thats how it works.

If only we still had the death penalty for this **** and the twat that killed John Hunt daughters and wife, and for that **** who tortured killed his own daughter Sara Sharif, so many scumbags in this country at the moment.

I might be missing something but why would ricin suggest a terror link?

Whilst the guy who runs this site cleans the thread up because it has gone off at a tangent here we go again. There are some on here who just play the race card because someone doesn’t actually believe the system works the way that they think it should. It is an easy cop out. Taking the thread back on to the track there are legitimate concerns as to why the Police and others were adamant during the first few days of the enquiries that there were no terrorist connections. On the assumption that the terrorist training manuals and the bomb making equipment and the authorities had him on watch would have been established literally within 24 hours, why did they continue with that stance. It may not have been a cover up but it challenges credibility going forward.
I believe you may have misinterpreted my post.
He was not an immigrant. It was suggested he was by various sources.
He was not a Muslim. Various sources suggested he was.
He was not an asylum seeker. Various sources suggested that he was.
Why did those sources suggest those things?

Within days, we saw rioting under the mistaken belief that this UK national was an asylum seeker who had arrived in the country the previous day. Well known politicians and journalists perpetuated this myth and suggested that information was being held back. This was the catalyst for violent rioting. The rioting centred on mosques and asylum centres.

I suppose the question comes back to why do some people have to know what the person is, beyond being a murderer, which he is now proven to be? If I hear of an incident like this, race and religion and immigration status are NEVER my 'need to knows'.

Look at the fucking state of the ****. Trying hard to look evil yet is really a complete fucking coward who went after defenceless infants.

Leave him in a locked room with a load of handy lads and see how big bad and evil he is then. I hope he gets battered every single day he’s inside.

The fact that this lad was known to authorities and slipped through the net… more than this cowardly **** needs gaoling for their failings.

It's not terrorism under the law.

There was no use or threat of action designed to influence the government or an international governmental organisation or to intimidate the public or a section of the public, the use or threat being made for the purpose of advancing a political, religious or ideological cause. [Terrorism Act 2000, s.1]

Well known politicians and journalists need to be asked whether, if he had been an immigrant or a Muslim, it would have justified thugs attacking migrants and Muslims.

As an aside, when we had hanging we did not hang juveniles. (At least not since the early 19th century.)

So if we still had hanging, this guy would not be hanged as he was 17 when he did it. He would have been put in prison for X years, but would eventually have got out. Which is how it is now.

Why wasn’t his past history brought up before? It’s like Shipman all over again in which his strike-off for self-perscribing drugs was swept under the carpet.

The “lack of funding” excuse I knew would be played.

Don’t let facts get in the way of someone’s pro death penalty rant

This will probably happen.
I discussed this with my wife, who is a psychotherapist specialising in trauma work. We spoke at length, but the first thing she said was that he looks absolutely insane. In no way does this undermine what he did, nor why he did it, but unless you incarcerate children the moment they display a hint of violent tendency, these sporadic events will happen. They are, I contend, more likely to happen without proper investment in schools, social care, youth services and mental health services. We have to address that, but it will still never rule out every one of these situations.

I heard this a lot today, that funding was being used as an excuse. Nobody is excusing his behaviour. What is apparent is that the cutting of public services makes it more likely that vulnerable children will fall through the gaps, either as perpetrators, or as victims. There is no excuse there, just a statement of fact.

I do not know if his history has been raised before, or not, but I assume that it would prejudice a criminal trial. Prior to that, agencies were aware of his history.

Hopefully he will meet a very painful end in the not too distant future so our tax money isn’t wasted looking after this scum for the next 50 odd years.
Sadly, both this one and the right wing protesters that are going to prison will likely just mix with kindered spirits in prison (for their own safety) and emerge even further radicalised.
