space questions

So what did actually happen to the dinosaurs ? Surely someone on BM has the true answer to this question?

And no it isn't 42

(1) They reckon a meteorite hit the earth at shitlick pace and made the Sun go poof (The stratification layer with a coco pops deposit in it sort of proves this)

(2) It was a dino virus like ebola annd because the dinos didn't have thumbs they couldn't inject themselves.

(3) They morphed into birds and are still with us now in all their eclectic splendour (Although I would hazard a guess that Dinos balls were bigger than a Chickens)

1) why did a meteorite not wipe out everything just dinos

2) a virus that wiped all the dinos on all the continents?

3) why did the big nasty dinos need to evolve into birds, surely they were the top of the pile?

1. It did. That particular extinction level event was famous for wiping out all the dinosaurs but it also caused mass extinctions across millions of different species in the animal and plant kingdoms. Around 75% of all life on the planet died due to that one event.

3. Evolution isn't about what animals "need" but rather how they can best adapt to get food, stave of predators and reproduce in equal measure. Dinosaurs didn't turn into birds, a very specific subset of dinosaurs evolved to have fused fingers and longer arms. Over the course of millions of years, they eventually became a species that are the ancestor of modern birds. One of the misconceptions that people have about evolution is that what we have now is the "standard" and it was a race for species to get here. Birds and lizards and humans continue to evolve today under the same pressures as they did then.

But how do we know a meteorite wiped them out.

I'm saying Aliens.

Because of the massive crater under the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Mexico.

Or, earth becomes so over populated in the future that to save everyone from starving they build a time machine, travel back in time and bring back huge dinosaurs for everyone to eat! :)

Yes I'm a bit bored staying at home babysitting a poorly 2 yr old. We've watched cbeebies, played football now waiting for him to wake up fir lunch

Impressive.

I was under the impression the meteorite hit Mexico in the gulf by the peninsula (south east) and the initial explosion wiped out nearly everything and this cataclysmic explosion caused a climatic phase bringing on a miny ice age which killed everything not living in caves. :)

Why did they never build a permanent base on the moon? Surely it makes more sense to explore space from there rather than earth because of gravity?
