Special Trains

One I was on to Barnsley, train hit a horse on the line one Easter weekend mid 80s, we drew 0-0 and got beat by Leeds on the Monday

I remember two Christmas games on the trot at Fulham and Charlton and we got free food on the special as it was Christmas.

I was on that Southend night one as well , remember no heating and getting bus in from Westcliffe On Sea , 0-0 and got back at 3:00 am at Stockport Station

Pompey away was another classic , stood up all the way on the special stood in the ground and got chased back to the station.

Loads of Pompey trying to get on the station to attack the train after the game which we won 2-1

Anyone remember Watford away one where it caught fire and we were stuck there for hours

Happy Days

I was on that Barnsley one. Remember is getting to Barnsley about 30 minutes after kick off and all running down the hill to the ground. Was like a scene from Zulu....

Other one ago remember was Notts County In the failed promotion game. Train went there full of tables, windows etc....not many left when it pulled back at Picadilly!

Any one remember the days of the Soccer Special Train from Piccadilly for most of the away Games? Im sure Ian Cheeseman from GMR Used to be in the "Buffett" bit dishing out Sandwiches before the Public Health Inspector got hold of them?

Aye, the Supporters Club took over the organising from British Rail around the mid 70s, Howard Yeats used to be in charge with Cheesy looking after "refreshments" (he's much better as a broadcaster). ;-)

Despite the trains being made up of old carriages they were an upgrade on Finglands coaches and didn't get bricked as often!

You never went to Stoke away in the 70s & 80s then.

I certainly did, maybe I was at the other end of the train. I can recall the special getting bricked a few times after night games but if you went on the coaches in the 70s it happened after nearly every game,

Happy Days

remember it well, think it was a cup replay on a monday night, the second replay was on a thursday night and we got dicked at MR

I remember early 70s we just pulled out of stoke station we pulled the emergency cord and we had a battle with the stoke lot ,light bulbs and fire extinguishers were chucked down at them and bricks were thrown at us happy days lol.

Remember going to Ipswich on it in late 80's, 7 hours it took, think it was similar when I went to southampton

I was on the Ipswich one late 70s, when Mariner Wark etc played for them. Again 7 hour journey there and back OK till we got to London then had to wait forever while they changed the engine to a diesel the east coast line hadn't been electrified. Then they took us on some old disused lines at about 4 mph across North London. Escourted to the ground lost 1-0 then had the journey all the way back to Manc. Food a fucking disgrace but the banter was brilliant, oh the good old days.

Remember going to Luton last match of the season around 1975 , me and mates around 15/16 year old , 6 cans of skol lager , went through a tunnel in pitch darkness and when we came out the table had gone ! That was the game Rodney Marsh was subbed and sat in the crowd . Pitch invasion at the end and mass brawl in the centre of the pitch!

Remember going t west brom midweek with about 25 on the special probably early eighties and losing 4-0 only to get back to Manchester to find the rags had won fa cup semi v Liverpool at goodison .

There was also the football league liner with a disco ! Fairly certain we had it for newcastle .

Mad happy days !
