speed up your computer?

No. Best way it to run a defrag and disk cleanup. Other than that, faster processor, and more RAM is all you can do.

anyone know any programs that will compress and speed up my system??

cheers

Exactly as quietriot says. Crap Cleaner is a good free utility to clean up your pc. Most good defrag programs aren't free, however you can get something like PerfectDisk for free from torrent sites or binary newsgroups easily enough.

Don't you find the windows defrag thing to be sufficient?

I don't really rate the Windows one. You can see that it's not that good as if you defrag using the Windows one and then run a 'proper' defrag program after there's still bits everywhere! More importantly, the Windows program won't do an 'off-line' defrag of your swap and page files and when these are fragmented they can really affect performance.

No. Crap cleaner doesn't remove any applicatons unless you ask it to. Just things like cookies, reg entries etc.

also when you get programs running in the background also. Scanners are a particular annoyance. If you are on the internet on a site that doesnt pose a threat and you have no other connections (E.g. PnP) then you may be safe to shut down the scanner. Performance will be quicker but at a slight risk.

Also if you are working offline (E.g. Processing) then switch off your internet connection. It is quick to switch on and off, and programs running in the background won't be connecting to the internet checking for updates all the time and your PC will be quick.

Sometimes you can sacrifice a quick start-up for a fast speed in long run. Let all programs run then when you start them it will be quick
