Speeding Advice

Hi all,

I know this is an invitation to lots of people telling me not to speed but I'm just looking for advice not a grilling! I think a speed camera has just flashed me about half an hour ago, I was in a 30mph zone, and don't think I was doing anything over 34/35, it was genuinely an accident I didn't even realise at all...

Basically I was just wondering if anybody knows if the CTO are likely to offer me a speed awareness course (I believe its anything over 38mph that the course doesn't apply?) and will I still be offered said course even though I have only been driving around 10 months? Also, I noticed that the camera that flashed was painted in red, but have seen this:

"Q - Do all cameras have to be painted yellow? [top]

A - (ATS) Red Light Cameras do not have to be yellow, although most are now in Greater Manchester. All speed cameras do have to be yellow though."

It was not a red light camera as far as I am aware and so could the ticket be invalidated on this basis? Want to avoid court and all that so won't be taking it too extreme, just wondering what you thought my chances would be on either getting the course or getting the ticket invalidated on that basis?

Again, I know I shouldn't have been speeding and I don't do it regular, but I could do with some light on this matter if anybody knows?

Basically mate, you were speeding, regardless of what colour the camera was, what technicality you can grab out of it.

If you got flashed, and there was film in it, and you get done for it, very hard to get away with it.

As you've only been driving so little time, isn't there some rules saying if you get points in your first year you get banned or summit?

My advice would be, just take it on the chin, the system is a b@stard, designed to be as ruthless as possible!

The rules say that 6 points in the first 2 years and you get your licence revoked and have to take an extended test, nothing about points specifically in the first year though. Yup know how it works, naturally they're going to be harsh to cut down on emissions etc and whatever else makes them do it. Just have to hope/pray for the course I guess!

The cameras have to be clearly seen for the revenue to go back to the local police etc.

GMP and lancs do the speed awareness courses, you may get offered one, but you spend a day there and the cost is more than a fine. However it could be worth it.

Just because it flashed it does not mean there was film in it etc. Hope you get lucky, I have a few times, but other times not so.

Yeah that's what I thought, I'm hoping that with it being painted red and not reflective yellow like the GMP drivesafe site says they have to be, that it will be a dummy.

I'd happily pay the extra £20 for the course because my insurance jumps up quite a bit with me being so young if I have the points on my licence.

It was clearly seen once the bloody thing had flashed lol...

Trials are normally pointed out with some sign. Not sure on recent rules. My insurance went uo £50 every time for one year, but it was a while ago.

I thought you where allowed to go 10% over the speed limit, (3mph) plus i think its 3-5mph extra at the local forces choice. So you should get away with it if you were only doing 35.

I know people with an SP30 for 33, every force is different.

I remember hearing something about that a while ago but don't know if it got scrapped or still applies or whatever to be honest. Like I said I'll be happy to take the 6 hour course and fork out £80, thats not a problem, I just really really don't want the points to be honest! Hate the 2 week window where they can get the letter to you, it's depressing haha!
