Spelling Mistakes

You're not allowed to drive a car without taking the necessary examinations. I think they should use the same standards for people on internet forums and those thick c**ts who regularly misspell on menus outside cafes and pubs.

If you can't use the English language correctly, then leave it to those who can.

Pot. Kettle.

i think it is fair to say i have an adequate command of the English language. my clients think so; i write for a living. it should be patently obvious to anyone who can read that my sporadic capitalization is deliberate.

to be fair, most people aren't bothered by my being obsessively over-protective of my shift key on most forums. and fair play to those who point out grammar mistakes that impede communication.

however, i just have to point out one thing: there is a total of one blathering cunny on the entire internet who has been obsessively carping on my refusal to capitalize the first letter of a sentence. that would be one Coldberg on the SI Games off topic forum. in addition to being the most petty, pissy, pedantic cunny in the history of petty, pissy pedantic cunnies, Coldberg is a rag. the moral of the story? next time you're feeling pedantic, think about the company you're keeping.

You'd love that bloke on .nob who types everything in caps.

Spelling and grammar are vitally important in written communication... Fairly obvious I would've thought, but worth stating it seems.

If someone has to double-take or re-read your comments because it has the wrong syntax or spelling, then that is bound to interfere with the reader's reaction and feeling for what is being said/written.

When we talk face to face, we use other visual and auditory clues to understand what is being said and the rules of grammar and obviously spelling are obviously less important then than things like tone of voice/eye contact/body language etc.... If you've got a mumbling, shuffling ugly buffoon in front of you then you're gonna switch off and go talk to someone who you can actually understand. Simple really.

If you don't understand these basic rules of Human communication then don't be upset when your message isn't getting across and the reader/listener switches off from your original point... Yes I do spell-check, with this little tool which underlines misspelled words for me as I type, and I do proof-read my longer posts etc., it's called having standards and some "class".
!
For those of us who bother to pay attention to what we and others "say" and how it is "said", then it is frustrating and niggling, although sometimes entertaining to have to wade through crap. But that's my problem.

As I've said before, there is a startling correlation between spelling mistakes and WUMs... An opinion based wholly on empirical observation.

basickly if u cant spel then i fink ur a fik cnut oo probly as ad no propa educashion an ur peple skilz r baisd on showtin a lot an lernd from de jerry springer sho n trisha innit so dont be upsett if peple ave a go at u

Now, to me that took more effort than doin it rite!

Dons tin hat and takes cover...

1.618034 ... agree...

with the caveat that when grammar and spelling interfere with communication, they matter very much. if not, not.

i seriously doubt that anyone has had a hard time figuring out what i'm saying because of my disdain for capitalization. fair play to the self-appointed grammar gods in that they generally don't have a go at me over it (except, of course, for the aforementioned rag Coldberg).

my convoluted reasoning, on the other hand, may well interfere with communication...

Well Zeus, it's pretty apparent that you know the rules, but you chose to ignore certain ones to generate your own style... I think that's more than acceptable and something totally different from the illiterati that we're talking about here, that just don't want to make the effort to understand what the rules are and why they exist in the first place... Or they hide their ignorance behind the cloak of txt spk.

But like I say, chose your style and run with it, but understand that you will be judged on it... End of.

I have come across some really dreadful spelling mistakes on here and I have never, ever seen them in any other walk of life. Things like “fort” for “thought”, “are” for “our” are just beyond belief for a country with schooling for all. And it is a forum and spelling is not particularly important but I do wonder how some people get on in life who can’t use the correct your/you’re. Basic primary school stuff.

Having said that I would not pick anyone up on it, unless they pick up mine first!!

i know i was on about gorrilla's on a thread but spelt it the other way and some one got the hump ffs
