It’s not 72 hours before returning to the UK, the 72 hours only applies to entering Portugal.
It’s 3 days….read the govt official website
If you have your PCR on Thursday (anytime) it allows you back into the UK (Sunday anytime)…. The govt even give you a example to confirm this…using Friday as the entry day into Uk…stating your PCR is valid if taken on Tue Wed or Thursday

Official Government Information

You are correct. The official Government web site states 3 days for entry to England. However it has been misinterpreted by some sources.

This is what the the Government site actually states for anyone who has not seen it:

"You must have proof of a negative coronavirus (COVID-19) test to travel to England."

"You must take the test in the 3 days before the service on which you will arrive in England departs.

For example, if you travel directly to England on Friday, you must take the test on the Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday."

3 days is specified and the above example given. There is no mention of 72 hours for the return entry requirement to England.

"Where to take your test

You will need to find a private test provider to take a test.

You can choose to take a test:

* in the place where you start your journey
* in another country on your way to England, if you are travelling through another country".

If everyone prints the correct pages and takes a hard copy with them or just clicks on the links, the information is there to cover you.

A lot of us are in a similar situation of having the PCR Test on Thursday (with same day result); flying out Friday morning, and returning Sunday afternoon. Based on the Government web site, a negative PCR Test result from an accredited tester will cover us for entry into Portugal, entry into the stadium and entry back into Manchester.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-testing-for-people-travelling-to-england

" Before you travel to England you must:

* take a COVID-19 test
* book and pay for a day 2 COVID-19 test– to be taken after arrival in England
* complete a passenger locator form (also complete a plf for entry into Portugal)

On arrival in England

You must take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2 after you arrive."
