Sporting CP (A) - Post-Match Thread

Loved the game last night. Fair play to the sporting fans who were very loud towards the final whistle despite being 5 nil down. Respect to the players as well who walked around the ground at full time and applauded the fane. Wish we could see the same at the etihad. Unfortunately though, it's half empty at 80 mins (or half full if you're an optimist)
Half full is pushing it mate. Me and the kids stay to clap the players off and there’s deffo nowhere near half the crowd left, especially as the players leave the pitch. I would say that as the final players leave the pitch there’s a max of 2k to 5k

For the people that went to the game, one of my mates who's from Portugal originally, went back there as a Sporting fan. He sent me a video saying that the City fans are kicking off and throwing stuff. The video is outside the ground and from what i can see, the police or security are segregating the away fans by creating a barrier while Sporting fans are just running about everywhere. Can hear the City fans chanting "what the fucking hell is that" at something but it doesn't seem that bad to me.

For me, this is mostly due to how European clubs view and handle away fans. What i gather, from what he has told me anyway, is that when you have away fans in the league, they can sit wherever they want. You can go to the Sporting game with your Porto supporting mate and be sat right next to each other with your shirts on. They don't understand the segregation at all, outside the ground they all just walk around with their shirts on bantering each other. So when the English fans come over, their security and police have no idea how to deal with it and just go all out attack. This is a policing issue IMO, take the fans directly into the ground but away from any of the home fans, and there is no issues. Don't pen them in like cattle and then beat the shit out of them when they act out, because you're treating them like animals. He's coming to the game at the Etihad as well, i told him he will be pretty shocked at how different it is when they are marched directly into the away end without hardly any contact with home fans. Even when the Ukranian team came a couple seasons ago (Dinamo something i think?), they walked from the city centre to the ground but had police escorts who just politely ushered them along. We were all just stood there watching them march down outside the ground to their meeting point, literally no trouble at all and i even shared some of my fucking chips with one of em as they walked past!

Anyway onto the game. I agree with Bernie, we weren't great in the first half, well not as great as we know we can play, but fuck were we clinical (not something you can always say about this side). That is something that experience brings in the CL, something that Sporting are lacking of recent times. Their manager is really young and a lot of their team is inexperienced in such situations. It seems like the night got to them and our boys just beat the snot out of them as payment.

It was noticeable on some of the replays last night you could see City fans, maybe foreign ones, jumping up in the home ends when we scored.

I saw a video of someone in the home end showing off a United/Ronaldo shirt which seemed to annoy blues on the other side of the fence. I wonder if that was the "that" you refer to being sung about? As an aside, i've never understood why football fans go so mad when they see a rival shirt on an opposition fan. They might walk past dozens of United shirts throughout the week but then they see that one, which is obviously a pure wind up, it's like it provokes them into full on rage. That actually caused a load of trouble and bottle wars in Amsterdam: City fans chanting "Feyenord" at Ajax fans.

I went to a 6-nations rugby match a few years agao and all of the fans were mixed in together which was quite an eye-opener but all very good-natured and no trouble at all.

I think Jonny boulders is capable of playing in the middle, no problem at all.
Bernie ,raz and cancleo tore them on left side .
Credit to sporting , i was watching their shape and they were so compact with fantastic positional play. They had a good communication between the front middle and back .Very synchronized .

I guess a lot of fans went over without tickets, think it's much easier to get tickets from touts abroad.

Don't think so, the video i have is outside the stadium before they have even got inside.

Yeah when i told him the reason's for segregation over here, he just couldn't get his head round it. He wanted to go to the Etihad with me, but sit in the home end with his Sporting shirt, and just couldn't get it when i told him he would probably get punched by some psycho.

*tongue in cheek time* (just saying so no one gets offended!!!)

How very dare you put that piece of rubbish in a City shirt.... you have disrespected the beautiful, wonderful Blue shirt!! Tut, tut, tut, you have now invited the wrath of the Eccles Blue down on you. Be afraid, be very afraid!! :-( grrrrr

Desmond ?

This will most likely be the last opportunity for Fern to win a c/l winners medal.
Is it not the case that a player needs to make a number of appearances to qualify for a medal?
That being the case, I am more than happy for him to get game time after everything he has done for us over the years.
Plenty of years left for the young 'uns!
You beat me to it, I was going to say something along similar lines. The youngsters will have plenty of opportunities (fingers crossed) whereas Fernie might not.

Did anyone find any cheap bars which do food I'm hoping for somewhere to watch the football tonight
There’s one just behind the market across from main Metro station that was reasonably priced for food and drink, next to Sophia has black awnings. Italian. Then as a bonus you’ve got the Liverpool bar 5 mins walk away for the game... :-)

Ooooh, I wonder if five is gonna be enough?
