It's going to be really interesting if City do object to the pitch, particularly given this is entirely Spurs' responsibility. I'd love to know what they've said behind the scenes about their expectations. They absolutely will have done.

Some of our crowds in the mid to late 80’s were pretty shocking, the 10-1 being a case in point.

They look shocking on the face of it but relative to other clubs at the time and considering we spent 4 out of 10 seasons in the 2nd division during the 1980's, our crowds held up really well.

I don't have the exact figures to hand but as far as league games go, out of all the clubs in England we had the 3rd highest "lowest" league crowd during the 80's. Only United and Liverpool bettered us. United got 23k+ vs Wimbledon, and Liverpool 17k+ against someone who I can't remember. Our lowest league crowd that decade was 15k+ vs Reading and Millwall.

For comparison, Everton dropped to around 13k when they wanted Kendall out, Arsenal got 13k for one game in about 1983 when they were something like 3rd in the league, Spurs dropped below 10k at the back end of the 85-86 season, Chelsea dropped below 10k at various points (as they did in the 90's too), and I think Newcastle flirted with going below 5 figures as well. So 3 of the so-called Big Five at the time recorded lower league crowds than City during the 80's, despite being top-flight ever-presents throughout the decade whereas we went through 2 relegations.

The English game in the mid and late 1980s featured crumbling stadiums, terrace violence, dismal football, fans being treated like shit by the football authorities and the police, and a welter of meaningless games with no English sides qualifying for Europe, so gates were pretty pathetic across the country. In that context and bearing in mind our on-field performances, our figures were actually very creditable. The mid-sixties pre-Joe and Mal was another story, of course, and that's where to look if anyone wants to have a pop at our attendance figures.

i'm pretty sure that there was an attendance restriction in place, weeks before this fixture, i remember reading that weeks ago. God knows why though.

Not even close to being shocking. 43000 not in their own stadium is very good. They took a cracking following to Milton Keynes and have had some brilliant attendances at Wembley.

Our average attendance in the CL is around 43000. We used to steadily get 25000 for domestic cup for years at the CoMS and the same for Europa Lg games when we were in that bar the Hamburg game.

It's also worth remembering that under the Swales regime our attendances seemed to have been routinely under reported. My guess would be that we actually averaged over 20k in 87-88.

They just didn't bother opening the top tier. Probably costs a bomb to pay for staffing it all. The same happened in the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final at Wembley the other month as one of the teams was from the South of France and they brought 7000 fans over. I think the capacity of Wembley without the top tier is 47000.

Just going back to that utd wimbledon game...i ve read a few times that it looked as thp there were under 18k there...season tics were automatically counted...not ununsual of course...but the 18k estimates were from utd fans who were there.

United for a long time were the only club to indicate season-ticket holders in attendance figures whether or not the fans in question actually turned up. Being the best-supported club was a big point of honour with their board, and they favoured publicising the biggest possible gate - i.e. the number that had actually paid to attend the game rather than the number that actually did so. That's commonplace now, but at every other club in those days, any discrepancy was inevitably in the direction of under-declaring the true gate. A lot of fans I've spoken to from various teams have claimed their boards did similar in the seventies and eighties, but Swales was a particularly egregious exponent of the policy.

Newspaper reports at the time also claimed that the United gate for that game against Wimbledon was well below the 23K that was announced. IIRC, some estimates went as low as 15K, a figure I remember because that was (and still is) as low as we've ever had during my lifetime for a league match. Don't suppose anyone will ever know the truth for sure.

I agree - other than hte real Spurs locals, Wembley is pretty straightforward to get to (and much better for Cardiff fans, presumably).

60k in N17 is certainly going to be awkward to manage. I can see a lot of games starting late.
