All I really want to see between now and the end of the season is a bit of consistency and cohesion in our performances. Not wildly swinging from fullbacks going into midfield, to one high and wide fullback, to two high and wide fullbacks. Two in midfield, three in midfield. Wide forwards wide, wide forwards playing narrower. Prioritising measured football, wanting to be more direct. Pick a system and style and stick with it, with only minor tweaks here and there.
Think it’s fairly obvious that, at heart, Pep still favours having one of the defenders go into midfield. With good reason, as that’s what has brought us so much success. So go with it. If that has to be Lewis for now, so be it. Play one of Gundogan or Bernardo to give us an extra body in the centre of midfield (Kovacic at a push). And I’d tell Foden I expect him to play as an attacking midfielder from now to the end of the season - not as a second striker holding hands with Haaland or Marmoush but a bit deeper, trying to get back to being more creative. And if he can’t do it, give Grealish or McAtee a go.
If you take that side and plug in a proper right back (or left back) who can go into midfield, plus a top class creative midfielder (Wirtz!), plus Rodri and Haaland, then there’s the makings of another class side.
