Spurs (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

The midfield might come good when Rodri is properly back up to speed but that defence will take a couple of seasons to fix. Only Gvardiol and RAN worth keeping

Loved the line up when it was announced. Really thought we’d play with pace and intensity….fuck me was I wide of the mark.

Not sure what’s going on, could be some politics at play in the club regarding transfers but for the first home game of the season we were appalling. No intensity, no desire….we just didn’t seem interested in giving them a game.

Player for player, we have by far the better team but we didn’t seem to have the answers for their press and intensity. Could it be because Pep is losing the core of players?….nobody seemed to want to work for him..

Being beaten like that is about coaching. It's like he wasn't expecting a press...but you only had to watch them against PSG to know that's what spurs do.
Pep has struggled against this tactic his whole career… he won’t change his philosophy for one match and if a team that plays like this, plays well - and we’re not at the races, we lose.

Cue some over reactions on this thread. The only thing for me that was really bad was all about fitness - Spurs looked so much sharper and fitter and we gave them very few problems as a result. The start was good and if Omar had a better day finishing wise a goal lead would have changed a lot.

It's early and lots to work on but similar issues with poor fullbacks Rico and Ake had very poor games in my opinion and our 2 central midfielders played way too deep giving them plenty of space. Feel sorry for Trafford it seemed a lot were willing him to f**k up with his passing out and that manifested. He will need to show a lot of character now and perhaps Donnaruma may be closer than ever...

Always a cup final for Spurs but boy do we need to up our work & intensity - this is not pre season and other teams seem faster.

Few good glimpses but we have to be much stronger mentally - as soon as Rayan went off injured we panicked and went to slow, slow build up play again.

Trying to comeback and we have Doku and Bernardo on the wings. We wouldn't score in a month of Sundays with those two.

We started well and it basically all fell apart once Ait-Nouri went

Stop Panicking.

It's a rebuild and there will be growing pains.

Trafford was solid and didn't do anything wrong!!

Deserves to be our number #1. For everyone complaining I don't see you doing any better than him and he showed his grit with that double save!

Trafford was solid? Mods! It’s a troll.

Anyone else surprised by that? Im not in the slightest nd lets not get this twisted...where did Spurs finish last season? 15th?

Since last year and over the summer transfer window numbers on here have spoken about the need for a number of things that are not going to work

1. Rico Lewis at right back - I was happy to see him linked away...absolutely awful to see he has been given an extended contract.. We played better last year when he wasnt on the pitch. He is woefully unaware defensively on a consistent basis, He is physically weak and easily bullied, he slows down the attack when in possession, barely creates anything and gives the ball away consistently...and is Nunes an improvement on this...No

We either buy a right back in the next couple of weeks or we are going to struggle again. The only other alternative to solve this issue is to play Khusonov at right back or at least drop one of Stones or Dias and play him at right sided centre half. At left back I said at the start of the transfer window we needed two left backs - others screamed - we have Ake or Nico OReilly - yeah but one is injury prone and one isnt a left back - when you start saying "oh but x or y can play there/put a shift in there you are basically saying you are accepting a downgrade in player.

2, You cannt play Reijnders and Cherki in the same team...both cant defend. I said in the pre match thread there was a danger of the midfield being exposed - it was overrun. This leads onto point 3.

3. We need defenders who can defend 1vs1 - we dont really have it...Stones is ok t it...as is Ake (and we talked about the known injury issues with both of those). Dias is awful at it.

4. Goalkeeper - I said weeks ago that if we are going to play Trafford then our style of play has to change...we are at present caught between two styles....When Trafford kicks long it comes stright back to us as the team isnt et up to do it...but you could also clearly see that the back 4 were not as comfortable in giving the ball to him under pressure. I said teams will press more - exactly what spurs did for the second goal and consistently throughout the game. Ederson needs to be in goal and be number 1...if that cant happen (ie he doesnt want to stay) we need to change the ay we are playing as we cant play out from the back....especially again with Rico Lewis and Dias (and Ake)

5. Wingers who produce very little. Marmoush is wasted outwide but is he a number 10...im not so sure.? What he gives you in shooting and goal scoring potential from outwide we lose in any potential to go outside the fullback. Doku at least tried (and succeeded) to get balls into the box...but again he is unpredictable and wasteful). Oscar Bobb on the other side is aa number 10 mascarading as a winger...hugely talented footballer but like Foden he needs to be central and is wasted outwde...but does he get in there ahead of others?

We just got deservedly beaten by a team that finished 15th...

Will we get better - yes. The patterns of play were not there which is clear, Cherki didnt seem to know his role/position(slightly worrying), Rodri will come back (but again number of people on here have said what happens when he aint there - we have just seen a taste of that)....Nico G has to improve or again we are in bother as there is no other alternative.

If we get Donarumma the playing out from the back will only get more and more risky

Physically, we are still miles behind all the top 6 contenders, weak and slow players all around the pitch. Today Spurs were in no real danger. In fact, they had better opportunities in the 2nd half as well.

How the fuck do you even begin to analyse that?

Players that played really well last week (yes, against a poor side) suddenly unable to do the simplest of things. Reijnders, Cherki, Trafford really poor.

Bernardo brought on to calm it down and keep things ticking over - he looked like a competition winner.

Ait-Nouri will be a real loss for us. Has to be O'Reilly there now.

The worry is that Pep sees that and goes back to Gundo, Akanji etc. Because that was way worse than any performance from last season.
