Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "The performance was better in general. We missed the simple passes a lot but we gave everything. We made it hard for ourselves with the second goal. We know the physicality they had. We lost simple balls.

On things progressing with the new signings: "We have done many good things in this period. We have to shape that period we have to finish the transfer market, we will see how many players we have and then after that we will see."

Difficult against Spurs: "It happens a lot with Spurs, they punish us always in that position. I'm not going to say Spurs are better with Thomas [Frank] or better with Ange [Postecoglou]. Spurs have always been a good team and last season they were and this season they are again."

On Ait-Nouri's injury: "I don't know, I didn't speak with the doctors yet."

On having enough players: "We have to have enough players to play every three. four days in this demanding league."

On facing Brighton next: "We have seven days so we will recover, analyse and talk. We will find the right balance."

Are you on planet Zog!¬!!! John Stones was MOTM and that is without just my input. H never stopped working, he was watching and leading and if you look at the MOTM thread you will see that it isn't just me who thought he had a good game.

Spurs pressed and harried so well, very impressive so they deserve credit for sure, but we could have outscored them today. Second goal killed us and that's why We were so open and panicky in the 2nd half I feel.
I like our new signings but they're gonna need time to get up to speed and unfortunatley we're probably going to sit through some dodgy performances in the meantime. I think we need a RB and I'd play Khusanov as he has so much pace and I thought he looked OK after the chelsea mistake?? But maybe that's just me thinking that? Surely we need more pace.

I agree Khush or even Nunes would have been better for this game with their pace.

Rodri is back and will strengthen us against counters and on the physical side.

We also lost balance after the Ait-Nouri injury. Probably would have been better to have brought on O’Reilly.

Cherki and Tijanii willbe excellent the are still bedding in.

It is just classic City loss under pep. They usually come against United, Spurs, Real and Leicester before.

It is really annoying but we should be used it by now. We also know that Peps teams improve over the season.

Current team not fit to lace their boots. No question about it. But then, we will not see the like of that again. I certainly won't.
100 points?? Never been done, and there's a reason for that. That was a once in several generations team. I think it was better than the treble team, as it happens.
No, let's stick to comparing the current City team to others around it. As I say, it's early days. Pep has to work out what his best starting eleven is. Today wasn't it. Although it was not very different to last week's.

Really? I dont think they were anything special in that regard. This is a Spurs side who have had a new manager for a matter of weeks and could legitimately claim not to be anywhere near where they'll eventually expect to be right now. I expect most sides willing to press high to offer just as good if not better pressing than that.

Some folk don't want to acknowledge it. Very lacklustre and had so much of some of last seasons showings written all over it.

That's because we didn't. Our game is a passing game and we failed in every facet of that. Too long, too short or gave our player little chance and theirs every chance.

Grealish - may seem unfair but he was the club's record signing and he's been shipped to Everton before his contract ends, ultimately hasn't worked.

Trafford - good shot stopper but the rest of his game looks sub par. Very early days but I don't see it with him.

Khusanov - started reasonably well for us but has since become the invisible man. Bewildering.

Reis - meh.

Marmoush - will fluctuate from average to good, he'll sporadically knock in some bangers but will never be consistent.

Gonzalez - definition of a nothing player, would be brilliant against ten cones but a midfield that actually moves expose his limitations.

Kovacic - neat and tidy but his best days are behind him and he can't stay fit.

Savinho - shown some signs but looks like he's off.

Doku - probably the worst winger in the league.

Gundogan - hasn't contributed a thing since his return.

Cherki - will be brilliant but he's gonna need experience alongside him.

Reijnders - see Cherki.

Ait Nouri - gonna be class

Gvardiol - class

That's not alarmist, it's the harsh truth. And that's before we address the Palmer shaped elephant. Factor in Rodri getting back in shape, Foden trying to rediscover his game, Bernie deteriorating, and a manager that looks like he's struggling to evolve, and what we're left with are performances like today. I will say this, if Rodders doesn't get back to his best we're in shit of an unfathomable depth. I do think Lijnders will reenergise Pep and freshen up ideas, but today was concerning.

I agree with what your saying and I think your appraisal of some of them is actually too kind.

We have gone from looking like the most fwd thinking, best ran club in Europe to a club that seems to have completely lost its way.

Shambolic penny pinching transfer policy.

An ability to step away from the stereotypical player we have signed to seek a better balance in terms of physicality.

Now we aren't physical enough nor are we good enough technically.
 
How Richarlison stayed on that pitch I will never know. Someone pulled me up in the match day thread for criticising the referee. I'm sorry but if that referee passed his exams I'd be surprised.
My outdated certificate is probably more up to date than his refereeing!!!!!!!

Granted we did not have a great game, our passing was abysmal and we somehow lacked something and on balance maybe Spurs deserved the win but a different referee we might have got a different outcome. Seven minutes added in the first half but only four in the second. Their goalkeeper wasted more than 4 minutes with his hanging about and their throw ins as well as being way, way, way away from where the ball went off the pitch took over 4 minutes.
 
Haaland must be tearing his hair out, he made some great runs in the second half and no one slid the ball through, very poor performance all round, I was really looking forward to this game after last week, I thought we had changed our style to a quicker pace but we reverted to tippy tappy shite from the back that the players we have just can’t do.

Agreed I thought spurs were solid defensively but really poor and offered sod all going forward that wasn’t of our own doing. We will play a lot of better teams this season.

Agreed but we have seen it before. We usually start poorly as well early in the season as we start preseason late.

It is really annoying and Pep should have made some tactical changes based on experience. However reading some of the comments they are laughable.
 
Overall spurs pressed very well, we had no time on the ball all over the pitch.
The kick off from the 2nd half said it all, we had no idea what to do with the ball and it looked like there was no composure.
We're going to have to up the level of fitness and speed, the training is obviously too slow and not physical enough.
 
Grim that.

First time in a while I didn’t have belief we could overturn a 2 goal deficit. I did think this season will be difficult, and this game goes some way to prove it. Trafford home debut - nightmare, Cherki home debut - subbed, Riejnders home debut - ineffective.

We were miles off it today.
