Spurs (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

After a few hours to get over a disappointing performance I think it's worth pointing out the following re the starting xi

4 players were making their home debut.

Of the xi only 5 were here 12 months ago.

Of those 5 one was Bobb who has had a handful of games. The other is a 20 year old.

In essence the only experienced City players were the 2 CBs and Haaland.

Given all that it's hardly surprising we were disjointed.

lets how differently Pep prepares for Brighton now. we should react to his horrible performance but last year we had lot of games when we needed big reaction to previous shit game and we underperformed again

we just look uncomfortable as soon as opponent does things we dont like.like they press us, we panic, lose possession. they work hard off the ball, we dont match that intensity and lose duels, lose races, second balls etc. its just poor how we react when opponent doesnt lie down for us or when they not as shit-mediocre as Wolves.

problem is Brighton may watch this game and tries some of the things Spurs did. will Pep counteract that?

I am starting to get the feeling he doesnt know whats wrong with these displays. too early to panic, but this cancelled all positivity we had from Wolves game, Pep also talked about how he feels different this time, lot of positives in training, more hunger etc, it sounded good backed up by the Wolves game. but this game took us back to last season.
first half was horrible, but second half we needed reaction and imo it was closer to 3-0 at times than us pulling back to 1-2 and thats very bad, at the very least we should have brought it back for a draw to save a point. but if the games goes on another 90 mind do we even score?

we beat Wolves away and lost to Spurs at home last season too, so no actual difference fixture to fixture. up next Brighton away which we lost last season. we need to start improve vs last season right now. going on international break with 1 win, 2 losses would be quite poor start.

When you watch traffords calamity again from the angle behind the goal.. wtf was he thinking!!??

He could have chosen 4 or 5 other easy options that would not have ended in disaster
Or if Pep had any sense he would have told Trafford that every dead ball should be launched into the Spurs half making them turn and chase, there’s no offside from a goal kick so no need for Ederson accuracy just fucking launch it long and let the front three chase it.

Just got home. Thankfully, it being the first home match of the season I went for a post match pizza and drink with friends. It softened the blow of what was a poor performance.

Quite aside from the two goals we gifted them, the second of which was farcical and is embedded in my mind in conjunction with the Benny Hill sound track, we were second best all over the pitch which was a little worrying. They looked more organised, had a plan, looked fitter, faster and considerably stronger than us.
It's a concerning display considering the run of games we have coming up, there were problems all over the pitch, defence, midfield and forward line. The promise of last week's display is a distant memory and we have been brought back down to earth with an unwelcome bump.

Blame Ederson, blame Ortega, blame Trafford, blame Rico, blame Haaland, blame Foden, blame Dias, funny how it’s always the players to blame.
As much as I think Pep has got a lot wrong in the last 12 months including today, he isn't to blame for Marmoush missing that chance, Haaland missing a header from 6 yards, Trafford passing it straight to the Spurs forward and Haaland not being able to roll the ball five yards to Cherki. The system isn't always great, but there was some really poor individual performances and errors today.

I agree with what your saying and I think your appraisal of some of them is actually too kind.

We have gone from looking like the most fwd thinking, best ran club in Europe to a club that seems to have completely lost its way.

Shambolic penny pinching transfer policy.

An ability to step away from the stereotypical player we have signed to seek a better balance in terms of physicality.

Now we aren't physical enough nor are we good enough technically.
I don't think its down to penny pinching, necessarily. We're just not identifying them the way we used to. Our last veritable transfer success was Haaland, obviously the jury is still out on our summer transfers.

Worst performance today for me was Pep. Did nothing to influence the game. I love him but today is the first time I've thought he might be too tired to maintain his standards.
Allegedly this is why he’s brought in 3 new younger assistants with energy and fresh ideas who can lessen the burden on pep

Let’s see if they can help pep rectify some of the same old problems from last season that were all too apparent again today

There was a poster earlier on in this thread urging us to 'not panic' (apologies to the person concerned).

Well, imo, this is exactly the time to panic.

This squad is not good enough or deep enough to make the top 4, never mind compete for the title or Champs League. It is physically weak and slow as fuck. It is mentally weak and complacent.

Maybe Pep will stabilise the situation enough to get us into the top 4, but is that good enough for a club this size and pedigree? I think not. I didn't see anything in the tactics today that looked any different from last season - we played a shit team last week who made us look good, but got exposed completely by a pretty average Spurs team - and that is on Pep! God help us against Arse and Liverpool.

Viana to me seems to be buying for the Portugese League with small technical players as opposed to the brutes like Yaya, Kevin etc. that we used to buy and definitely need.

Also, why are we not acting like a big team. Go get the big players with the big mentalities. But instead, we get fancy dans and fairies who look great in inferior leagues rather than the top players like Wirtz, Barcola etc who would scare the beejesus out of the opposition. The opposition just don't fear us anymore. Go and stick £80m down for Liveramento, or £100m for the PSG winger, etc. What's stopping us apart from not wanting to look crass. Bollocks to that I say.

And as a big club, you say thanks but no thanks to players who are past their best or just not good enough, instead of holding on to them. No other big club would do that cf: PSG with Donna Summers. Also, what other big club has not one proper right back in the squad?

Can you tell I'm pissed off? Some will say I'm spoiled - so what - I support a big club, I've been through the shit and now I want gravy with my chips every time - shoot me.

Rant over.

PS: I hope Pep and the team prove me wrong - I love humble pie.

Actually that is very fair. Add to that we rarely hit the ground running, and we had the cwc to mess around with and maybe there is mitigation
The above said there was still a big problem with fight once we were 2 down
Plenty to work on

I think it is the players. They’re the ones on the pitch.

Honestly I think if you put the best XI players in the world in a team right now and it’s managed by a league 1 manager, they’d still win the league, or come very close.

Equally, give any manager, including Pep, underperforming, weak, slow players who can’t shoot, they’ll struggle.

The system Pep requires a team to play needs world class players and performance. Any drop off in either of these ends up in today’s or last season’s disappointing results.

Essentially we said the same thing after the embarrassment of the CWC. This team was given time to sort things out and we came into the season like we ended it.

Yep. This

Time to move on from the pep era. Im hugely grateful, but im a city fan , not a pep fan.
Too many are pep cult conscripts
Absolute bollocks.

People that want Pep in do so because they think it's the best thing for the club, no other reason.

They might be right, they might be wrong. But don't questions peoples loyalties and objectivity sit because they have a different opinion to yours.
