Yes, a reputation system where enough downvotes by the users of the site will get you auto-banned. Upvotes cancel out downvotes, like Digg or Reddit. This means that the community could ban users that constantly post threads that are useless or shit. Of course, there would be warning systems, etc, so that you didn't go from zero to an without knowing it. There could also be an option to auto-ignore posts from users below a certain reputation threshold.

I mentioned this in a thread where me and URG had a really good debate about it's merits. People tended to believe that if you had opinions that went against the grain, you would be banned, whereas I thought that the community is mature, diverse and big enough to self-regulate. Also, we encourage the point that it isn't because of their opinion, it's for been a tat which gets you downvoted.

Can`t you just allow free speach and if serious transgressions arise leave it to the MOds to sort out as they do admirably at the moment.
Your suggestion leads towards censorship and is too subjective.

It isn't subjective either. Have a look at reddit.com or digg.com for concrte implementation of the idea.

The mods cannot follow every user, and be around 24 hours a day. This system gives them a filter.

People will be getting votes against if they are not particularly eloquent or not humourous and not on grounds of offence. The system works well (not perfectly) as it is and posters are more disposed to debate and banter to prove their points rather than just resorting to wanting someone banned and pressing a button.
I`m in the Voltaire camp and detest restrictions.
The Mods do a great Job and obviously they cannot monitor all posts - but those that do transgress into sensitive areas are brought to their attention. The site is self-policing in that respect.

i just find it fucking frustrating why people cant just be given the info and be happy with it they always want more , spursmad does not deserve it and he was doing us a favour in the first place so to those who fucked him and everyone else off , you deserve it !
