This article sums things up for me.

Picture the scene. You’ve got billions burning a hole in your pocket, ambitious plans for Premier League domination and the transfer window is finally open. You’re going to bolster your squad like no-one’s bolstered before. It’s time to make some headline-grabbing signings.

So why on earth Man City seem so determined to splash the Sheikh’s cash on Craig Bellamy must class as one of the game’s greatest modern mysteries.

The Welshman is trouble with a capital T and after the recent rumours of player dissent at Eastlands, the last thing Sparky needs is a scowling malcontent like Bellamy upsetting his youngsters and fragile foreigners. God help them all if they haven’t got UB40’s ‘Red, Red Wine’ on the club karaoke machine. Just ask John Arne Riise what happens next.

Amazingly, Bellamy has already racked up £31 million in transfer fees in his career and if City continue with this madness, that’s going to be nudging £45 million by the end of the month.

Surely someone has had a word in the Sheikh’s ear by now? Surely someone’s mentioned Bellers isn’t exactly football’s most popular or clean-cut fella? Surely someone’s at least explained he’s vastly over-rated, doesn’t score that many goals and in all likelihood will be brawling with his team-mates before you can say ‘put that golf club down’?

Seven clubs before his 30th birthday tells its own story and he has sown the seeds of discontent wherever he’s gone. City are a side in flux, looking for a new identity as the millions filter down, and the right characters are as important as big-name signings.

Obviously Sparky reckons the Welsh connection will help tame the demons but a leopard doesn’t change its spots. As the old saying goes, there are none so blind as those who can’t see.

Yawn
