Stadium Name

From the perspective of an American, it's pretty common for stadiums here to have their naming rights sold. If it's a brand new stadium, the branding is probably about the only way it'll be referred to. If it's an older one, people usually stick with the original name from my experience. In some cases, even with a new stadium and branding right off the bat, people will still call it something traditional (i.e. Cowboys Stadium rather than AT&T Stadium).

And I'm half this guys age.

We go to "City" only time I'll say "etihad" is when speaking with tourists who are struggling to find which Tram to get on

Hello all, we are a research team at Manchester University looking at fans’ views on the naming of football grounds.

We’re really interested in getting any City fans’ views on the naming and renaming of the club’s ground over the years.

Would love to know how anyone feels about all those name changes (Maine Road, City of Manchester Stadium, Etihad Stadium), and what those names mean (or don’t mean) to you.

We have the moderator’s permission to start this thread, so look forward to reading some posts on this…
Are you and your great unwashed buddies aware Maine Road wasn't renamed The City Of Manchester Stadium?

We moved about three miles away. To a new stadium. After the 2002 commonwealth games, about the same time you discovered masterbation and Internet porn.

I love students me.

How ironic... a wanker can't spell masturbation properly ;)

I was glad it was renamed the Etihad, easier to fit into a sentence than "the City of Manchester Stadium". The stadium is pretty new to us in the grand scheme of things, and we're still making it our home, so a change of name now has been accepted by fans.

If a company had tried to rename Maine Road, there would have been more resistance (a la the Geordies with "Sports Direct @ St James Park"). I know I wouldn't have been happy going to see City at the "Franny Lee's Bogroll Solutions" stadium!

We were al students once - some successful, some not so successful.

I like the ground being renamed the Etihad as it emphasises the Arab connection - something which I like. I don't think of it being as commercial and tacky as the Sports Direct Stadium although I realise that it is named after business. Perhaps its a business that isn't as well known.

In general I don't like the connection between sport, football and business but it's something that dominates everything even education so its become accepted. If Maine Rd had been renamed, it would be in name only. It would always be regarded as Maine Rd whatever label it was given.

I don't mind what it is called. Maine Road was the definitive football stadium for me.

I love the Etihad and I use that or City's ground when referring to it nowadays. Maine Road was never in East Manchester as I am sure you know. In giving you the benefit of the doubt for that I will hope that you just didn't read that sentence through properly when you wrote it. :-)

City of Manchester Stadium was shite, as was/is the unofficial Eastlands. Etihad is fine. If they tried renaming Maine Road the Etihad, it would have been a different story.
