Stand leaders

but I get the impression the club are trying to improve things for the fans.

They are only listening to one section of the fans on this, and are expecting everyone else to fall into line.

I'll bet you and your family were going as berserk as the rest of the stadium when Kun scored THAT goal, proving that you CAN do it when you want.

A good example of atmosphere that simply can't be scripted, or planned or generated by a man in a team leader shirt.

We should actually start every home game (when applicable - night game) they way we did in our title winning season at home to manure.

Lights off, big screen with the Blue Moon Rising and the music blasting - the atmosphere that night was amazing and must have made the manure players soil their shorts upon standing in the tunnel waiting to come out

Something like that would allow us as supporters to join in making the atmosphere as loud as possible straight from the beginning and give our players a massive boost as well

The club must be absolutely amazed by some of the negative responses on here!
Fans complain the atmosphere is crap so the club try & do something about it - what a bunch of bastards!
Obviously it's a difficult thing: you can't really manufacture atmosphere but I get the impression the club are trying to improve things for the fans. I actually enjoyed seeing Jason Manford before the game in City Square & on the pitch.
Before you start you I'm not a cash-loaded JcL - I've had my season ticket for nearly 30 years and tbh, I don't really miss being beaten at Bury. Times have changed!

No. It's not negative. We ALL agree that the atmosphere can be flat, and something needs to be done to whip up the fans. It's just that this 'something' has got to be the right 'something', and sticking a Stand Leader amongst family groups, complete with flasks and butties, isn't the right way of going about things. As I alluded to earlier in this thread, it only takes ONE person to whip the crowd up before the game [see the Besiktas video], and after that the crowd at that end of the ground will have been whipped up and it will carry on over to other parts of the ground.

You've lost me on that one, sorry.

Exactly this.

I have to say that's a cracking post Marchie and sums up a lot of what I feel as well. Apart from the fact it's a BARM!

I do know at least one nonagenarian who watches City regularly.

Thanks. You're totally wrong, of course, but in the spirit of friendship, I am sure we can both agree that it isn't a muffin!

If you think that nonagenarian might be my grandad, the clue is in my username - he doesn't live too far from you.

Do you really think that the AV guy and the chap who switches the lights on and off were the main drivers behind the atmosphere that night? Do you really think a team of title-winning professional footballers is scared of a bit of crowd noise and thirty seconds of relative darkness?

Allow me to throw some other reasons into the pot for the decent atmosphere and United's collective "squeaky bum" that night:

  1. We were playing in our local derby...
  2. ...knowing that 3 points would take us top of the league with two games to go.
  3. We'd humiliated them 1-6 earlier that season and they had narrowly beaten us in the cup because of a generous refereeing decision.
  4. Three games previously, they had been 8 points clear. Now, that lead was down to 3 points. Lose against City and they've probably lost the league.
  5. Fergie set them up to try and snatch a draw against a better team and United are notoriously crap at that (e.g. whenever they play Barcelona)

Wembley '99, the FA Cup Semi-Final derby of 2011, the home derby and final game of our title-winning season of 2012... you think that a spot of darkness and being deafened by Fat Boy Slim is going to make that happen in a run-of-the-mill league game against Sunderland in mid-February?

Excellent post Marchie. Spot on on all counts. I have to say that after years of watching hapless journeymen it is now a delight to watch what really is a different ballgame. However, even sitting in the North stand at 54 years of age I'd love to sing more if someone else would only start it. I can see the lethargy that comes from the increased expectation spilling over into grumbling rather than supporting when things aren't going so well. I think a "leader" might counteract that.

Some people will just not except that the majority of our fans do not want ultras or Capo's. I like to think of myself as pretty vocal and I'd love to see the stadium rocking every week but organised nonsense like this isn't the way to do it. There's a huge difference between atmosphere and just noise. Bayern Munich for example just created noise, they didn't even bother cheering that much when they scored as they wanted to get back to singing their boring, repetitive drum led chants.

If this allowed to happen far from improving the atmosphere it'll make it worse, I won't be joining in with some cheesy chant just because some geek asks me to, I'll just stop singing.

It couldnt make the atmosphere any worse, its already shocking , i didnt think the Bayern fans were that bad, seen better Dortmund, Napoli, Aris and Poznan were better but thats just my opinion .

i get get the noise and atmosphere bit, you need noise to create an atmosphere, how many times have you heard players and fans going to intimidating grounds say the NOISE they make creates an incredible ATMOSPHERE !

Of course you need noise for an atmosphere but not just noise for the sake of it. Nobody would say that vuvuzelas should be introduced and they cause a racket.

A number of things will happen IMO if this is brought in. Firstly we'll lose all originality in our songs, we'll probably end up with our own version of that god awful "we love and that is why we follow" bollocks before long. People who don't want to be organised by some self appointed top blue will stop singing and where we once had atmosphere relatively to what's going on on the pitch we'll just have a small pocket of kids banging a drum and "woahing" while bemoaning others for not wanting to do the same.

The most memorable atmospheres are spontaneous and can't be induced by stand leaders. The only way the club could significantly improve the atmosphere is to make it easier for groups of mates to sit, or hopefully stand together, in future.

Yes... I couldn't remember the match exactly, but the blackout backfired terribly last time and was embarrassing for the club, hence it being ditched... hopefully it goes better this time and our fans actually sing!

if they hadn't priced out the fans who actually create a atmosphere in favour of those who just come to witness it for a day out there wouldn't be a problem

Wansnt it when we beat Bolton 1-0?

It was brilliant against United when they had a flare, great atmosphere but got a bit tedious when the club started using it every other game

Don't see the problem in at least trying it... If they can synchronise songs between stands then what's the problem? Ideally we wouldn't want nominated people but it's at the stage where anyone who does try to start something off is pretty much on their own...

TBH this is a result of the utter failure of the current "singing" sections... especially the South Stand IMO, so anyone who stands in there, and doesn't really bother joining in on a regular basis, shouldn't complain too much without looking in the mirror first.
