I think unless Yaya is injured, Mancini will always start him. No matter who we buy.
Hart
Kompany
Yaya
Nigel
Silva
Tevez
Those 6 will start no matter what the offseason brings. Who else will join them is a question for debate
Having waded through the various transfer threads (esp Sanchez) I was getting a bit weary of the transfer speculation but this post catches my eye. If we were a really world beating side who would we add to this list (which I agree is our core starters). I think if we look at the current set of players possibly up for transfer
we would struggle to fill the back four with anything better than we have. Sanchez fills a void in midfield if he is as good as they sat he is, but any obvious others?
Not true. Outside of Kompany we can do better at Lescott, Micah and Kolarov's positions. ANd we have actually been linked to players at those positions in the past. Micah I personally like because he brings a unique quality of speed, size and power- So his rare, and I will wait for him to figure it out. Lescott on the other hand is below quality. Vertonghen will do much better and so will many others, perhaps even Cahill that gets pilloried here often. Kolarov is a bit of an enigma, but my sense is he will not improve offensively unless he starts using his brain.
In midfield, we could use an improvement on Barry, not coz he is bad but there are many who just do it better. Nigel is a fan favorite, but he's offensive instincts are mediocre even though most fans will argue against this consistently. And based on his performance this season Adam Johnson simply isn't fit to be a starter on a championship seeking team. He is (for now) the reincarnation of Joe Cole. A flashy dribbler that entices English fans but grossly inadequate in many aspects. This leave Yaya and Silva as certainties. Up front, I'd rather we were done with the Tevez era. Great player but City Player. This leaves the starting job to one of the 2 other strikers, Balo/Dzeko, both of whom have been inconsistent this year. But both showing immense talent> Balo more so than Dzeko.
So if we start in a 451formation as we did often this year. I'd certainly expect a new starter on the right side where (Milner/Johnson) sometimes operate. I'd also expect a new starter where Barry operates, and a Starter where Lescott and Kolarov operate.

Now this all don't have to be new players, we may already have them, but some will be new. At the back I believe they have to be new. We just don't have the quality at LCB & LB.
The midfield is a bit different, shuffling the positions might help. Perhaps Yaya deep, and Milner to Yaya's spot would work. RAM, it almost has to be someone new, no one has shown to be above average on the right, neither Milner nor AJ. And Silva is only 3/4 of the player he is on the left when he starts on the right. Which means Someone new and exciting for sure. ANd up top will depend on who is hot Balo or Dzeko.
