The size & 'state of the pitch' is an oft used excuse in the event of failure but it shouldn't be used because nowadays all major teams research the size and state of the opposition's pitch and adjust their training pitch accordingly for preparation training / water it if it's a known soft pitch etc.
Most prem teams prepare their pitch to give deliberate advantage too - at the swamp they water the opposition area approach before any game - even in a rainstorm. ..
It's all part of the home advantage and it's something that we have to deal with professionally - if we fail in that regard then we shouldn't blame the putch 'cos it's our prep at fault.
