Anyone on statins? If so how have the side effects been? Been told to go on them from tomorrow due to high cholesterol and increased cardiovascular risk

I have been on them for a few years, I was a bit apprehensive about being on long term meds but they said with my levels it was unlikely a change in diet alone would drop them low enough. I was getting monitored every 4 months or so for liver function etc and everything was ok. They asked me to start taking an additional tablet to reduce levels further and then I seemed to drop off the system and before I knew it, it was about 9 months before my next assessment. When I received the results I had to immediately stop taking them as my liver levels were showing significant damage. I was sent for a scan and everything was fine. I started on a different Statin and everything been fine so far.

About a year after all this, I read an article where they have found that the blood tests taken to check liver functions etc whilst you are on statins can produce highly elevated liver results but it isn’t actually causing damage to your liver, which is exactly what happened to me.

I believe they are reviewing this as it is possibly causing people to come off statins due to phantom results and causes more negative reports around the risk of taking statins.

If your levels are high, I would certainly recommend taking them.

That’s reassuring! Cheers!
I was only put on them for choleseteral issues, nothing else. Make sure you get regular (annual) blood tests to check on the level. Due to covid I missed a couple of years, couldn't arrange appointments, but now I've had them again, I'm reassured that the levels are still stable.

Most old fukers (including myself) are on statins and nobody I know has had any problems, benefits far outweigh any potential side effects.

Regular blood tests show up any issues

Wifey went on them recently, she's very sensitive to...well everything really, and no side effects noted

I have been on them for approximately two years.
However I can only tolerate one every three days.
Any more than that and I end up with ‘the runs’, which is a well known side effect.

I have been told the same had a blood test yesterday for liver to see if that’s ok for the statin. I go away 8/5 i have annual holiday insurance now a heart attack and stoke are excluded until I get meds and have to pay around 35 excess premium to add it on. Hopefully get the result in couple of days and my prescription will follow as the travel insurance company need 5 days notice. All this from a poxy eye test lol

Indeed, they do - it's a fair assumption that they will re-test at regular intervals. If the OP wants to know, ask the GP what the future testing plan will be.

And yes, they're unsure for me if the statin has had a liver side effect, or whether it's something else - so onto something that's not a statin for 3 months before the next test.

Word of caution/advice.
About 18 months ago the doctor warned me about my cholesterol and wanted me on statins. Oh no said I, (as I'd heard all the bad stories) I will sort it myself, porridge every morning, fruit, exercise etc.
12 months later a blood vessel burst behind my eye caused by cholesterol. I'm now having injections directly into my eye and I'm on statins.

If you have an adverse reaction to one statin simply change to another.
