He didn't actually, he dislocated some vertebrae, and cracked one. His neck wasn't 'broken'.

So it was broken but it took 4 days to diagnose the true extent of the injury.At first medical opinion agreed with this diagnosis but when the pain persisted and Trautmann went for another x ray three days later it was discovered that his neck was actually broken.
