Stefan Ortega

He signed a two year contract last summer that put him on 90k per week.
His previous contract three year contract with us was at 55k per week.

That significant weekly pay bump last summer is likely why we can't move him now.
I am just curious if anyone else offered him 90k per week last summer, and who that would have been.
It looks bad now but keep in mind he had just made a save against the odds that won us the league and a good number here were preferring him to Ederson as our #1

I dont think the money is the issue, we would have just done Ederson, Gundogan and Akanji good terms for them to leave.

He just doesn't want to go to any of the options hes been offered, either thinks he should be playing at a much higher level or hes happy sitting at home on a weekend.

He’ll go somewhere, windows are still open

Totally understand that reasoning. My only response to that would be Gladbach reported interest.
He was born around that area

They're one of the bigger clubs in Germany.
The visibility of playing well for them weekly would greatly increase his chances of being in a World Cup squad for likely the only chance he had at one.

The only logical sense I can make why that move didn't happen, is because his weekly wages of 90k are too high for Gladbach to justify and he isn't willing to take a pay cut when this may be the last year of his life making this much money weekly.

According to this website, Gladbach don't have anyone on 80k per week, let alone 90k

Is there enough room in the hearts of City fans to believe that he’s trying to structure the balance of his career in his own best interests, rather than City fans?

He has two duties:

(1) Serve the team, when selected, to the best of his ability while under contract, and

(2) Provide the best life, both now and into the future, for himself and his family.

Looks to me like he’s killing it on both counts! Always been reliable when called and not simply walking away from one of the best jobs in football for peanuts.

Good luck to you, Stefan, mate. Take care of yourself, because no fucker else ever will!

Just a Thought, but is the Saudi transfer window still open? Could there be a club looking at him there? Wages wouldn't be a problem there I suspect. Being 4th choice isn't an ideal career decision

I don't believe what I'm going to say but there has to be a possibility he thinks the 2 we have will screw up with the system we have. He has better feet and still might be considered an option at some point. Far fetched, but he might still back himself as unlikely as that is.

I can see why your user name is arcademik and not academic.

Unusual that he is still here. If we knew he wanted to stay we wouldn’t have bought Bettinelli. I thought the idea was he wanted first team football above all else even if it meany he lost a few quid?

Good keeper but we don’t need 4

What’s the relevance to Bettinelli? He’s on probably 25% of the wages and HG. We needed him to replace Carson.

odd it ended up like this 1.5-2 years ago he was on a much higher shelf and seemed there is interest in him to make him number 1 elsewhere. now its like maybe the 5th or 6th best club in Turkey may offer him a chance otherwise will not play one game this season.

Guess he hasn’t pushed for a move. He’s happier to get paid well and take what medals he can get.

Did the clubs that came in for him guarantee him being their no.1? If not, why move to be second choice somewhere else, for less money. Particularly at a point when we signed a young keeper from the Championship and Ederson was known to want out.

Not on Ortega to do anything really. It’s on his agents and City. If his agents haven’t found the right club then I don’t blame him for doing the right thing by him and sitting tight. Imagine he has family here and it’s a huge call to uproot for something you maybe don’t believe in.

From the outside looking in, the goalkeeper business has been a bit of a shambles this summer.

It's falling into line with a lot of other areas of the club, sadly.
