Sterling’s contract - three year extension confirmed

Wow, you almost sounded scouse like then :)

As much as I like Pep he isn't the only coach in the world that can make players better and he we must have seriously overpaid at 50m for a rough diamond.

He was a good player when we got him, he is a better player now and we would struggle to replace him without spending huge sums of money, he is currently twice the player of Mahrez, our record transfer fee (fingers crossed he will settle in asap).

To be fair to Mahrez, I don’t remember Sterling ripping up many trees in his first or second seasons with us. In fact he was the boo boy up in SS3 for a while.

We did overpay for Sterling. We seriously overpaid for Sterling. The scousers had our trousers down on that one - no doubt about that at all.
He was a good player when he joined us but Suarez made him (and Sturridge) look much better than he actually was. Pep has improved him beyond all recognition since he joined us. I agree there are other world class coaches apart from Pep but you can count them on one hand.
What Pep has done for him is immense both from a footballing point of view and a mentality point of view.
As another poster has already said I would be far more worried if Sane was fucking about with his contract like Sterling is. Or KDB or Sergio for example. For me he's a very good player but far from being irreplaceable and I don't believe he would prosper at the rate he has at any other club like he has under Pep with us. Either he want's sign a new enhanced contract with us and stay at an elite club that will only get better and win more trophies or he doesn't. If he doesn't then sell him.

But currently he is way ahead of Sane in production numbers but you would be more worried if the roles were reversed, KDB and Kun I can understand, I like Sane and think he will be huge for us with his best years ahead, exactly the same as Sterling, in fact you are only kidding yourself if you don't think Sane and agent will be doing the exact same thing when it is his turn to renew his contract.

It is a sad state of affairs that footballers think they are worth 100-500k a week wages, so far removed from the normal working men's game that we grew up with but it is what it is.

You will not replace Sterling cheaper than what he wants if the rumoured wage is 275k a week, there is nobody as good as him that will cost us 5.2m in the extra wage he wants.

Of course players can run down contracts, you called them professional though for doing so which to me isn't. Whoever that person is, be it a City player or someone completely irrelevant where there are no emotions involved. For me it's loyalty, Sterling has been treated very well by City. I don't follow any romantic notion that he should have an allegiance to us for life there is a difference between just wanting to leave and running a contract down. Morally for me it is wrong for anyone to do that, like I said it wouldn't harm him in the slightest to sign a new deal (whilst getting paid more) keep playing as well as he is and then letting someone buy him. What he wants to do is leave the club, bagging a huge signing on fee and leaving us without a penny for him and having to spend a fortune to replace him. All of course if he does run down his contract by the way.

If you can accept that behaviour from someone, shafting the club you love and support then fair enough.
It's a job like any other so they are not required to be loyal, they will do what is best for them and their families like any other employee,so long as they are honest about their intentions then fine, how do you know what he wants to do?

I think this is the beginning of the long overdue reality check for the football fraternity. The pay up at all costs culture has reached its peak. Most of the growth potential for the ELP has be realised and players are in for a rude awakening if they believe the golden goose is immortal. That said in the midst of all the madness 275 K a week is reasonable. I would guess he could earn well in excess of this in Spain.

Tom. I can see your beef now because you are interpreting what I said wrongly. I never said they he was professional for running down his contract

similarly to Milner i.e. a professional who honoured his side of his contract
