Tales of Blue had the pleasure of catching up with former City midfielder Steve Daley for a Q&A on his City memories earlier this year.

Steve is an absolute cracking honest fella who endured some tough times following his record-breaking move from Wolves in September 1979 and talks about the insane abuse he received and the impact it had.

I met Steve Daley after going with my neighbour to watch Cardiff City v Wolves at Cardiff City Stadium a good few years ago. It was after the game and they kept the bars open in the Main Stand after full time so we went for a couple more before going home.

I was in the queue for the bar when a bloke walked past who looked vaguely familiar and was then queuing up behind me. I looked down and he had a press pass - it was Steve Daley and he was working for one of the Midlands radio stations at the time.

Anyway I got my pint, waited for him to get served, and then went up to him and said "F**king Halifax Town 1980!".

I'm a big lad and he looked more than a little startled and confused, particularly considering he was in Cardiff covering the Wolves match. It was at that point I put him at ease, explaining that I was a long time City fan and had been left traumatised as a 10 year old when my dad took me to The Shay and we lost 1-0 to Halifax.

To be fair he was great value and a proper gent. We were stood chatting away for about 20 minutes discussing his time at City and the story behind his transfer - He even got me another pint - all round top bloke.

Great story and he’s a great guy, he did an evening at City a few years back now as he was doing the after dinner circuits and started his act with “I bet you never thought you’d pay to see me again”

I was also at that game, I think my clothes have just about dried out now

I went to Bolton with my dad in 79 and he scored the winner. I was amazed as a kid that we had bought someone for more than a million pounds. He couldn’t live up to the fee and no wonder. We were a mess when Big Mal came back. Selling Barnes and Owen for less than we paid for him was insane. Not his fault obviously but a crazy period of our history.

I was at that game with my dad too; second game he ever took me to. I have vague memories of a big fight kicking off in part of the ground and Willie Morgan being constant trouble to our defence.

I can’t remember much about it. Think it was my second away too. Everton being my first which I think was 1977 when I was 8! Third was Liverpool in the League Cup semi final and fourth was United when we drew 1-1. Think Reeves scored! He left me at the railings at the front! 4 aways over a 4 year period!

So you randomly abused Steve Daley in Cardiff and intimidated him into buying you a pint. Great story, well done “big lad”.

First City match I saw.
Went to the match as a neutral. A huge difference in class and ability to what I had to ever seen before.
Moved to M'cr in 1979 and seen many up's and downs since then...
