Stockport railway viaduct.

21 months and 600 men employed to build it you'd be proud of yourself if you had a hand in laying the bricks for that knowing its made to last and standing strong more than a century later.
It took 6 years and 5 JCP programmes in the 1980s to repoint the brickwork and they couldn't manage even one side.
Jarvis Engineering - corporate criminals feeding off programmes to help the unemployed and lining their own pockets.

I think the brick arches primary function were to hold it up!

Really? I thought they were to let floodwater through.....:-)

Anyone remember the Fred Dibnah programme where he was demonstrating how incredibly strong an arch design was? He built a brick one in the studio about three foot high and then said "Right, I'll sit on it now to show you how strong it is"

It collapsed, he fell on his arse and all the bricks fell on top of him.

He said "Oh err, I think I should have let the cement set a bit longer"....

Is that right? people need proper jobs they can take pride in don't they, not these cheap labour programmes successive government dream up.

Marple viaduct and the aqueduct are fantastic pieces of engineering with lots of other Victorian masterpieces throughout the country that generations of hard working men built.

Im not sure if it's been filled up yet but the hole in the Mancunion Way is proving difficult and costly for United Utilities they think they fixed it once but the old Victorian sewers are proving rather difficult for three men and a ton of concrete now they'll have to do it properly.

Or the labyrinth of mine tunnels from the former Bradford pit was a contributing factor to the collapse of the Manc way ?
