Stress

Stress is never good.

Pressure can be good but stress is a state that comes when pressure become too much to cope with.

The Health and Safety Executive recognise stress and this is a quote from their website.

...."The adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them at work."

Stress is not an illness – it is a state. However, if stress becomes too excessive and prolonged, mental and physical illness may develop.

Probably true with some people, however it's a nice little excuse to get off work for some.

I got suspended from a company i used to work for just over 4 years ago,had worked for them for 4 years at the time, when i walked out of the meeting after getting told i was suspended there was just this huge kind of release and what seemed like a big weight had been lifted off my shoulders, promised myself there and then i would never go back even if i was given job back

Never realised the stress i had been under working for this company,i was just like everyone else ,you get on with things but dont realise they could be taking their toll on you and your health

I have no idea how people in high responsibility jobs keep it together. I'm thinking medical professionals, solicitors, anything where lives matter really. Even just owning your own business and having to find the money to pay the wages of your staff.. No thanks! I'd crumble in an instant.

I've never been stressed over money in my life (not that I've ever had much to spare), it's when I sit and think deeply about things that I tend to get stressed. It's interesting how different things affect people well.. differently. I suppose in general, despite being highly adaptive, we only know what we know. So I would assume the penniless homeless bloke who doesn't know where his next meal is coming from doesn't necessarily feel more stress than the Aston Martin driving manager who has 500 staff to pay.

Really interesting to see this, i have a job that involves a lot of pressure. There are times when i have suffered with depression and the job certainly doesn't help.

When i have spoken with people about this i have explained that i have a clear definition in my mind, I accept the job i have and the deadlines etc that need to be met, i also accept that the job is one that will never be finished. Every week there are chasers that have to happen, there are budgets that have to be met and measures that have to be met.
If it is practically possible to do what id demanded then i describe it as being a pressurised job, when we are being pushed to do something that is not physically possible i then describe it as stressful.
Knowing the difference is the key, I tend to thrive with pressure and believe i need a certain level to perform to my best. However when this turns to stress the situation can change dramatically.

I took up fishing about 4/5 years ago,i wish I had taken it up many years before, nothing better than getting away from it all and having a day on the bank :)
You are so right. I took up fly fishing about 12 years ago and it really helped my stress levels. Fly fishing is very therapeutic.

dont you think constant pressure makes you perform faster, smarter and more effectively. As a result more and more Is demanded and your performance has to step up again. We are all bloody hamsters on a wheel! I took it for damn near 40 years and took early retirement a couple of years ago. Do I miss the pressure, targets, budgets, objectives, governance, changes in culture, organisation, structures etc etc etc? Best decision I ever took.

I’ve been awake most of the night thinking, worrying about, stressed about work.

This cannot be healthy.

Too much is being asked of me and the quality of the priorities within my job is diminishing.

:/
