The reason we bought him is we had no other choice because we missed out of DDR and Martinez. No one else was left, we were desperate for a replacement for NDJ, everyone knew it so we got fleased on a mediocre player because we didn't get our business done early. I don't think we were "looking for bargins" either. We were in for Isco and Cavani and we bought Fernandinho 30m. Isco just chose Madrid over us and we weren't willing to pay 56m for Cavani. To be fair even Chelsea wasn't willing to pay that for him either.
I don't agree with much of what you say and I never said Garcia was a bargain! My assumption is that they bought Garcia for 16 million thinking/hoping that they were getting an excellent holding mid for a reasonable price ie. a bargain. Now obviously Garcia wasn't a bargain, (it was a retorical question to illustrate my point about the Negredo deal really) he could have cost 2 million and he wouldn't have been a bargain because with hindsight we know he is shit but the point is at the time they were hunting for a bargain. Just like with Negredo I assume they are hunting for a relative bargain. They are hoping that he will prove to be a top player for a reasonable price. Much like the Garcia deal, they went for the big guns, didn't get them for one reason or another so ended up with Garcia. Same with Negredo, they were in for Cavani but ended up with Negredo. I think there are real similarities between the two deals. If you are adamant that the club aren't looking for bargains then presumably you believe the club are currently just happy to knowingly replace elite players with a lower level of player at times? I love the idea that because DDR and Martinez had gone there was no alternative to Garcia so we had to pay 16 million for a player we knew was not good. Surely not.
I assume you mean drop off in quality rather than drop off in terms of price? My point is that presumably the club did not expect the drop off in quality between their original targets and Garcia to be quite as huge as it turned out. Let's hope the same doesn't happen with Negredo. And I'm not saying it will before I get grief!
