Neds done nothing wrong, see no reason to drop him. 1 Centreback and 1 Rightback for me.

I agree mate that he's not done anything wrong but he's still learning his game. A couple seasons as an understudy to somebody like Puyol or Terry would do his game the world of good.

I actaully said this in another thread but i'll say it again here; i like Nedum a lot however, he makes a lot of mistakes and does not have some of the fundamental attributes, skills and knowledge that a defender should have (dont let the ball bounce, dont smash the ball anywhere without having a quick assessment of the options around you(there may be better ones than just settle for a throw-in or corner), stay with the man you're marking on set pieces at all times and dont get sucked in to the area where you THINK the ball is going to drop(see Arsenals 1st goal against us)!) he needs to improve his passing and not rely on his pace all the time to redeem himself from letting the defender have the ball in the first place!

But he is playing quite well for us and was actually excellent last night (maybe at fault for their goal, letting the ball bounce again - he needs to learn to cut the oppositions long ball out with a header and not back off and let it bounce so the opposition has the advantage everytime!)

I think abit more experience will improve Nedums game!

A lot of great suggestions I think everyone agrees that we need top quality defenders it's just a case of who!

I really wonder if hughes' shopping list has similar names to ours? I certainly hope so!

I do worry though that his list may actually be:

Samba,
Warnock,
Nelson etc

Look at Hughes's sigings for us and they've all been good, the one thing that might keep him his job for next season! I think we should see who he buys and what kind of squad he is trying to assemble for next seasonl, then assess him on his job, not just after 1 season!

yeah id go with

Zabaleta--Agger--Onouha--Bridge

but to be honest i would like to think we'd get another left back as cover, but i wouldnt be annoyed if we got another left back to take over from bridge....not that hes done anything wrong, but i believe there is better

I don't know, i think he'd be better off actually playing beside someone of that calibre every week. You gain experience by playing matches. I actually think he's the best reader of the game we currently have in defence, his positioning is generally top notch.

Great reply, PD!! There's a Hughes type mentality on this thread! Perplexing reasoning!

I'd actually purchase a quality left back (Taiwo, anyone?), a quality centre back and a quality right back. I'd also buy an out and out left winger, same in a right winger and a good centre forward.

Taiwo... possibly, but he cant control a ball without it flying 5 yards forwards off his foot then have to sprint fast as fuck to catch up with it, but supports the right winger well and is a confident lad! Ive not really seen enough of him to comment on his defending!

Not great!! My friend watches the french league all the time and he don't rate Taiwo. Other than he's long shots he's got nothing speciall about him (certainly he's defending is weak). I would say he's a youtube hyped kind of players....

Glen Johnson-----Georgio Chiellini-----Jolean Lescott-----Wayne Bridge
Good ideas
Johnson is certainly a possibily we could get him from Portsmouth surely
Chiellini probably wouldnt leave Juve as theyre in the champions league
Lescott not too sure about Everton are in a good place so probably wouldnt leave

Tawio from Marsielle would be a good signing

We need another left back to give Bridge proper competition/cover. 2 CBs, specifically a replacement for Dunne. I'd get another RB too. So, yes a complete new back line. Add in a big guy up top and we'll have a much stronger more versatile team. I'd go for Agger as well, may not get him but no harm trying. Johnson would be a good call too.

They have been some good players names mentioned.
Glen Johnson - Pompey are in sh1t financially and they might go down, give them enough money he ll come and he is quality and will be England right back for next 5 years.
Agger - If we could tempt him to come he would be a class signing, problems with no european football to offer and bigger clubs sniffing around him - Milan.
Lescott - Would nt want him. Over rated cos he scores a lot IMO
There is a right back at Swansea called angel rangel or something like that. This boy can play a bit and would be a trier as he wants to play highest standard. For £3 - 4 million I would have a punt at him.
Hangeland - Big no nonsense centre half, Fulham would have us by the bollox in terms of money but from what I have seen this season he looks good.

I would take the 4 mentioned here and leave Lescott at Bin Dippers 2

not so sure bout taiwo. Watched him Against shaktar and he was worse than richards in a positional sense. His touch and passing were a major liability.

I'd go for Hangeland or whatever he's called - great in the air, and a similar type of player to Vidic, who despite being a red is a cracking defender.

Not too sure about Agger - he's more a of a 'ball player' if that makes sense. If Agger were to come in and partner Nedum for example, that would place more responsibility on Ned to make the big challenges, win the headers, and rely on Agger to clean up afterwards. Not sure thats Ned's game to be honest, but it may work if it were to happen. With hangeland (or similar type CB) though, it would be a more solid central defensive unit, in my opinion. Lescott could definitely do a job for us - perhaps we could use him in a Jo deal, as Everton have already said they don't have the cash to sign him... Give us Lescott and they can have the chump.
