Sunderland (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

Cherki could easily have had four assists, and besides that he even had a very good shot (although here he probably could have passed a few seconds earlier to Marmoush, who would have been left only with the goalkeeper) and the action at 12:38 – a beautiful through ball to Nunes, who hit the ball too hard across the penalty area. It’s easy to praise Cherki endlessly. And everyone does it. The media, the fans, and his teammates.

Pep will choose to praise Cherki when others are getting angry. And he will try to teach Cherki the hardest lessons at the moment when everyone is telling him that he is the best ever.

Pep knows that in the long run, statistically for the team and for the match result, a rabona < a non-rabona.

That’s why he will insist on a non-rabona tendency. From time to time it’s okay, but you, Ryan, have to build automatisms, and the rule is: no rabona. Messi is probably the best footballer in history and he never had an assist with a rabona – look at that clear example, Ryan, and answer for yourself.

Pep was not criticizing Cherki when he spoke about Messi or the assist, he was analyzing. At the top level you have to develop. People more often and faster develop through constructive comments and their analysis, not through praise of non-optimal solutions. But yeah, its much easier to praise then, its more emotionally logical, isnt it? Sometimes you talk on the training ground and pitch, sometimes in the canteen, but sometimes the message reaches the player most strongly when it is delivered publicly in a post-match statement. That whole thing is smart – that is man-management that is not easy or obvious, but at an elite level.

Ryan is a good and intelligent boy. Pep will turn him into a colossus. The fact that so many City fans think otherwise speaks badly of their intelligence, because they should know better – that is, they should know that Pep knows better. There are half a world of people who for the last 18 years have constantly and gleefully doubted Pep’s solutions. And for 18 years they have constantly been getting destroyed for it, sooner rather than later.

what ...to make comparisons to Messi, Surely a backhanded compliment and clever from Pep but maybe not ?
Nah not a back handed compliment. Not necessary to make comparisons to one of the greatest players ever. Why not just praise and encourage a young gifted player who has just played brilliantly.

At the risk of having been Clarkied; Barrow is nowhere near Sunderland.
I would think the closest club of any kind to Sunderland are South Shields fc ...... Gateshead fc might also have a shout ... and then, across the Tyne, there's Newcastle United of course.

I suspect he was just on bit of a wind up regarding Barrow, who are of course west coast/lake district, and are a good 130 miles from Sunderland ..... although, as has already been pointed out, they use FC Uniteds training facilities now.

Pep knows better but does Rayan? I guess we will find that out. Good post though mate.

If you can't enjoy that cross from Cherki... I don't know what to say really. I thought it was magnificent and the kind of entertainment I want to see. It was completely outrageous and provided an assist for a small player to head into the net. I don't know why Pep was talking about Messi - he's not playing at a top league anymore so should move on.

I felt a bit sorry for Sunderland, when you get beat by a goal like that from Dias, a thunderous header from Gvardiol then that outrageous Rabona then you just know it's not your day. It did make me smile in that I can imagine us playing a team in a few weeks and having 40 shots, 29 on target and yet getting beat by the same type of goals!

Great win, Arsenal dropping point will rattle them and it's starting to get a bit more interesting. If we can hang on their tails and put pressure on then who knows what will happen in May!

COME ON CITY!!

I was expecting a bit more from Sunderland to be honest. Thought they were quite poor. Surprised they are so high up the league.
Bang on.

Shows the league has been a bit poot until now, fair enough as players are flogged and messed around with International stuff.

I think things will settle down, the cream will rise (including us).

I think they will be bottom half come the end of the season.

Sunderland are the only set of fans in the country who can have a pop at us about attendances when we were shit.

They hold the 1st, 2nd and 3rd record average attendances in the third tier from the recent years they were down there. With ours coming in 4th behind them.
Bollocks mate, no one can.

When anyone takes the piss they completely ignore the fact we share the vicinity with a shit Club that get 75k!

Our crowds are fucking amazing and always have been.

We made much easier work of Sunderland than I expected, particularly after the second half capitulations against Leeds and Fulham. Thought it was a really good, professional performance against a decent side. Hopefully we’re starting to find our rhythm.

Former Football League club Durham City must be close (if they still exist) as they were playing in the Wearside League.

Durham is around 13 miles to Sunderland , but South Shields is only around 7 miles.

Useless bit of info time ..... For some reason the people of South Shields are known as ' Sand Dancers' !
