The Philippines is bracing itself for the arrival of its 25th typhoon this year, due to make landfall on early Friday (GMT).

Category five Typhoon Haiyan is the strongest storm to hit the Pacific region this year - and from the satellite imagery it looks like the perfect storm. Sustained winds at almost 200mph......I wouldn't like to be in its path.....so good luck to those that are.

Yes I've been watching this develop. Absolutely huge, the biggest storm in a very long time, and possibly one of the strongest ever. Looking at the satellite images as it just barrels towards millions of people, the whole Philippine Archipelago will be affected by this.

This satellite imagery is frightening. Latest wind speed are projected to hit 205knkts, that's 236mph. Nothing will withstand that, it's like being bit by an EF5 tornado for several hours. The loss of life will be huge.

-- Thu Nov 07, 2013 9:23 pm --

http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/wp ... e_anim.gif

Just been confirmed, the strongest typhoon to make landfall ever.

Super Typhoon Haiyan has made landfall. According to PAGASA, Haiyan came ashore at 4 am local time (20 UTC) November 7, 2013 near Guiuan, on the Philippine island of Samar. At the time, Guiuan reported sustained 10-minute average winds of 96 mph, with a pressure of 977 mb. Contact has since been lost with the city. Two hours before landfall, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center assessed Haiyan’s sustained winds at 195 mph, gusting to 235 mph, making it the 4th strongest tropical cyclone in world history. Satellite loops show that Haiyan weakened only slightly, if at all, in the two hours after JTWC’s advisory, so the super typhoon likely made landfall with winds near 195 mph. This makes Haiyan the strongest tropical cyclone on record to make landfall in world history. The previous record was held by the Atlantic's Hurricane Camille of 1969, which made landfall in Mississippi with 190 mph winds.

If this had hit any 'first world' country then all hell would break lose!

Why is it up to Bluemoon to break this news to most of us?!

Just been watching live TV, the water rose is literally seconds from the storm surge, and obviously I don't speak philipino but I'm sure they said 7-10 METRES. That is Hurricane Katrina type flooding if true. The loss of life will be in the 10,000's. I hope I heard it wrong.
