Superstars

Might be the lack of skeletons in the closet that's stopped him getting a title.
He got an mbe and cbe, but I found this on wiki :
At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Thompson, who had just won his second Olympic decathlon gold medal, wore a T-shirt that read "IS THE WORLD'S SECOND GREATEST ATHLETE GAY?". United States sprinter Carl Lewis had been dealing with rumours of homosexuality and the shirt was regarded as being cruelly directed at Lewis. "The second athlete could be anybody, Carl Lewis, anybody" Thompson stated.[14]

In 2012, he was accused of Anti-Irish sentiment after commenting on live BBC TV that the creator of a misspelled tattoo "must have been Irish". The tattoo artist was actually American.

As a sport rugby league players as a whole did well if My brain cell is working Des Drummond, Joe Lydon and Shaun Edwards all did well.

IIRC, Des still holds the 100m record.

As a bit of an off topic, I remember a celebrity edition of Gladiators (I couldn't bear the programme, personally), and I heard that Ellery Hanley was going to be on it. Didn't drink, always kept fit, looked after himself, etc. I thought he'd walk it, so I decided to watch.
He was shite.

Thompson's tee shirt had nothing to do with Carl Lewis. It was aimed at Jurgen Hingsen
Because of the time it takes to complete a decathlon, the competing athletes spend an awful lot of time sitting around together waiting their turn (and don't forget, this happens plenty of times during the season) and due to this time together they all strike up a friendship and respect for each other. This was exactly the same when Thompson competed and Thompson himself was an extremely popular character. Hingsen was moody and arrogant and was universally hated by all the other competitors. At the 84 Olympics, Hingsen broke the decathlon points world record but still finished second to Thompson, hence the tee
When asked about the tee shirt whilst wearing it Thompson said "in the UK, gay means "happy"" It was a real show of absolute zero sympathy at the extremely unpopular mega macho German who would have been gutted at breaking the world record and not winning gold

How the hell has Daley never got a knighthood??? Fucking criminal when you think of some others who’ve got them.
From memory, when he said (along the lines of) I want Princess Anne to have my babies, didn't exactly endear him to Buckingham Palace.

Mind you, Michael Parkinson once called The Windsors "the most disfunctional family in the world", years ago, but he ended up with a gong.
