Swansea City (A) | EFL Cup | Post Match Thread

I thought it was generally a pretty professional.performance after the early mishaps .... we went a goal down to a stunning goal, and then almost went two goals down after Khusanovs kamikaze pass was intercepted.

But we pulled ourselves together, and started to dominate from that point with an 'end product' ..... in the end 3-1 was a good result there because games like that are always potential 'banana skins'.

How very true. I was at Wembley for the final against Wolves, 1974. We lost. I was again at Wembley for the FA Cup final, Spurs, 1981. We lost. For various reasons, I was not at any other final. I would have bitten your bloody hand off for even a League Cup final appearance in the dark Swales/Lee years. Finally, in 2018, I saw us win at Wembley against Arsenal. It was incredibly moving to me. I had finally seen my blues win at Wembley.
This competition will never have the gravitas of the F.A. Cup to me, because I'm old school (and we won our first European trophy thanks to winning that cup). But it is absolutely not to be sneered at. To me, it is worth a hundred Community Shield trophies, and yes, this will be controversial, but it's worth more than the European Super Cup, which left me pretty thoroughly unmoved. Just my personal perspective.
Furthermore, it's a terrific way of keeping players on their toes in the early part of the season, rotating and giving younger players a chance to stake their claim, and generally creating a feelgood factor if you're getting through the rounds. Several times, we've won that trophy in the spring, and kicked on partly thanks to the momentum it creates.
Will it be “enough” if we win only that and nothing else, and fail to get top four? That's another question. But I hate the idea of “binning off” one of England's two domestic cups. I think it's disrespectful, and entitled.
So — I get the firm impression — does Pep. And the players.

I was at that Wolves final too in 74, in the Wolves end with 100 other City fans !

We had a bit of an all star forward line, and we were expected to win ... but Wolves fought their corner and i think it was John Richards who eventually won the day for them.

Bask in the glory of a side winning the fucking League Cup if you will - how fantastic! How awesome! How great! What a season!!!

Meanwhile, I'd rather fucking win a real trophy - the P/L, the C/L or the FA cup.
To each his own.

I used to hear rags saying that though. As if they’re better than winning just that, and that they should be winning the so called bigger pots every season. Entitled is the word I’m looking for.

City fans should never become entitled. That attitude is reserved solely for rag twats.

Winning this trophy is meaningless - there's zero prestige. It's like winning the FA Community Shield. Who cares?
All city fans care - well those that supported the club when we won nothing. It’s one of the 3 main trophies and should not be compared with the charity shield - albeit you can only win that if you’ve just won the PL or the FA cup.

Your expectations for our side are far lower than mine, friend - if that sort of performance qualifies as reasonably successful.

Top 4 in the P/L is a baseline requirement - fail to achieve this and it's a disastrous season.

From there - we should expect to win one of the P/L, C/L or F/A cup trophies - otherwise it's a subpar season.
Winning this trophy doesn’t mean we don’t win others. It’s a good start & gives players a lift - & some fans if not all

+1

Winning the League Cup isn't entirely meaningless... my point is, that in the scheme of things... it's not nearly as prestigious as the FA Cup (for me by a wide margin) which is the most comparable trophy on offer.

Silverware is nice - but I'd rather finish 3rd in the P/L with no trophies but showing good progress than win the League Cup and finish 4th in the Prem by some sort of lucky or very thin margin.

Or side aspires to the best in the world - and we've achieved this, previously. Now, settling for a League Cup win and qualification for the C/L is... embracing mediocrity - from a side previously hoping to finish world best.
Nobody is settling for it. You start as you mean to go on & it helps us use the squad

Do you remember the qualify back then? Or the space wingers and most players had! Look at them stats of how much players press and mileage they do in a game now than back then also managers are better coaching there players tactics are better!
Back then and I am talking about, years when we were outside of the Premier League, the City quality was only able to shine through, once the effort and intensity had been made by the whole team, it was lacking that last night, especially First Half!! :0(

You had to earn the right to play proper football in the final stages of the game.

I know everything has changed in Football , especially in the last ten years, maybe not me enough, and last night I just thought that they needed to be a bit more old fashioned in the way that they should have played??

Especially 1st Half, it took them too long to see that the referee was letting lots of stuff go that, would not happen in the Premier League.

Only 2 Yellow Cards, should have been about 3 just against Jeremy D!!

In my opinion, but they got there in the end :0)

As fan who started going in the mid 70s I am always delighted to win any of the cups available (probably not the world club thing but its new). I went to the 81 cup final with my dad, both games, and then never saw us even get as far as a semi final until 2010 in the league Cup. In those days we would get over excited by quarter finals, then always massively disappointed. I'll never get over the thrill of winning a cup final at Wembley.

Yeah understand every fan see games different and have there own opinions on players squad! I look at any game away will be hard for at least first 20/30mins plus that team had a lot of players who haven’t played many minute together some coming back from injuries! The average age was around 21 once pep made those subs though we took full control! All players need game time for me to get up to speed.. that’s my thoughts on the game

For me, positives from the game are the result, coming from behind and Cherki. And Nico G definitely.

I expect very little from this squad in terms of competing for any trophy and I can accept it, although I am not happy.

But our inability to play a good game of football for more than 45 minutes scares me actually,

See, this is where I’m the complete opposite on Cherki. You can see what he’s trying to do but isn’t quite making it. Time after time he gave the ball away with elaborate passes and only saved his game with one of the last kicks of the game.

I have no doubt that he’ll be quality, but he’s shown nothing yet that says to me that he’s a huge positive.

Another player, like Bobb, who’s become even better during absence. Are we that desperate, we’ve turned into United fans (Pogba).

Opinions, eh ;-)
I suppose so, but I'm honestly so surprised by this! Excluding the goal he had an assist, he created a handful of big chances (xA 0.63), was the most threatening player on the pitch (xt: 1.04), was a constant menace in a very occupied penalty box. We need players willing to do something. I still think he needs to learn when to be a killer and when to recycle stuff, but it was such a positive performance!
