Swap??

i can understand the economics work out very well, and that martin is not a poster boy for infectious energy, but i do have concerns about this one.

petrov doesnt only play well against the bottom teams. check his performance at the swamp last year. if he still has the pace to beat defenders and the stamina to make the run time after time, he has few equals in this league. his left foot is exceptional and he has tremendous ability to see and play the right ball whilst moving at speed. sure, he lacks physical courage, but he has the courage and focus to make the best of his attacking situations time after time.

bentley is potentially a very good player, but his temprament is, umm, odd. if hughes doesnt make it here, he'll likely be first out of the door. if the idea is to replace a negative dressing room influence with a positive one, I dont see how this achieves it. if the idea is to replace elano, then i dont get it. their ability to play the ball is extremely similair, but elano is a much better technician with the ball at his feet, and i rate his vision over bentleys. elano has been extremely inconsistent but has delivered goals and assists. ditto bentley.

too me it looks like the main reason for this swap would be to get one of hughes' enemies out and bring in one of his associates. It's not a bad move as such, it's just i hoped elano would be replaced by someone better, and i hoped that petrov's ability to deliver would be enough for him to find a place in our dressing room.

the question is: how does it improve the team as such? one the one hand, the whole thing is possibly a bit weak and lacking in imagination. on the other, it would be nice to have a more positive dressing room. all i'll say is arteta is a much more consistent and useful player than either elano or bentley.

petrov is left footed and bentley right, dont see much point in it when we have the funds to just replace petrov outright.

Don't think I'd want Bentley, poor attitude and hardly a success at Spurs....Can see Petrov going though.

Whether or not we get Bentley it is clear that we need someone to deliver set pieces, and more importantly defenders/midfielders who can make the most of them.
