Swimming Thread

My daughter was sub 10 minutes for 800m (32x 25m) when she swam competitively
My son is 12 and currently about 11mins for his 800. Got an 800 and 400 this weekend at a competition in Blackpool along with about 8 other races so hoping he can get a few PB's as they get so hung up on times.

My daughter was the same - big respect if you also had to do the 'getting up at 4am for the pool' thing for several years which seems to go with competitive swimming
Alarm set for 4:15am tomorrow and then again Thursday. Its a killer and respect to any parents who do it never mind the kids.

We were only on 8/9 hours a week training. To get any real benefit after that you're looking at the 4am starts and doubling the training hours
My girls achieved regional times but were never close to national

Yeah there is a massive jump from regional / county level up to nationals. My son has started making regional champs now and counties for Lancashire, but he is way off getting to nationals. He's training about 11/12 hours per week in the pool and land training as well. Great discipline for him and he's fit as a fiddle, but the step up to nationals is probably one i doubt he'll ever make.

This morning's swim was at Hathersage Outdoor Pool in the Peak District.
It's a community run lido, open all year round and kept at a constant 27°C water temperature.
They have seasonal events like fireworks & Christmas carol swims, and there's even a bandstand next to the pool.
There's also a cracking poolside café so just sampled a much needed post swim jacket spud and brew. The only downside is that you can smell the cooking while swimming so it makes you super hungry!
It's 5 minutes walk from Hathersage railway station which is an hour's journey on the hourly service from Piccadilly.
Managed 92 x 30 metre lengths today (2760m) so on 5290m for the week and just over 201km for the year.

Do you need to book in advance?
Might be a nice way to finish a hike

You can buy tickets in advance from their website, but can also pay on the day. I'd recommend advance booking if planning to swim when the kids are off school or during warm weather.
It was quiet this morning despite decent weather with "pay on the door" available.

And slightly off topic, but my train back to Manchester was delayed by a herd of ginger cows having a slow wander up the track between New Mills and Marple.
At least the driver was travelling slowly enough to stop and not wipe them out!

Sounds great but 27 deg C is very warm indeed.
