Sylvain Distin

i remember being in north stand when he came back and gave us the middle finger, was a top player for us.

remember when he scored at Boro the Stuart Pearce season when it looked like we might go down.

He celebrated in front of us and looked very pleased.
Am forever grateful for that win (and the 2 that quickly followed) - took us from 30 points just before easter and looking in the shit to safety.
Another name among the many who we needed to get to where we are today (if we'd gone down then no ADUG)

I thought Sir Joey of Barton(thank you Joey)kept us up alone while he was here?

I blame Pearce,he took the captaincy of him so in my opinion he lost respect for him.

My Brother (who was a bobby in Cheadle) has a great story about Yorke.
When the rags won their first title for decades back in the 90's a group of kids were knocking on the doors of rag players houses trying to get autographs.
Peter Schmeichel just looked from behind his curtains and then ignored the kids.
Steve (the elephantman) Bruce told the to "fuck off"
Dwight Yorke said "I'm going out now, come back later" The kids did and Yorke gave them loads of scarfs, hats, had pics taken with them.
My Brother who hates the rags with a passion had a total new respect for Yorke after that.
BTW, it was my brother's ultimate aim to nick bruce for drunk driving. He missed him twice, literally by seconds, before he transferred to the Devon Constabulary

To be fair, Dwight Yorke said the same thing to his own son Harvey a few years ago, but he never came back!!!

Remember his debut for us against Newcastle at Maine Road.He looked outstanding and the Geordies gave him loads of stick for being a greedy bastard.Scored a great solo goal for us against Bolton when we stuffed em 6-2.Read the game so well and played with great confidence.

I thought he fucked us off to go and earn more money.
Is he trying to say that he didn't want to leave?

We offered him the same as they did. He wanted to leave because City were going nowhere and moving to pompey represented at least a chance of success whereas staying at City would have just ended up in a depressing end to his career and shown a distinct lack of ambition, or so it seemed at the time. I don't blame him for moving and really liked Distin. It was a shame all the crap that happened when he came back with Pompey, but a bigger shame that we weren't taken over before he left and he hasn't stayed on with us as he was not only a good centre abck but a good left back.

I agree with S.E.H and the points he makes with Distin and Dunne. Maybe if Distin would have won the poty (which would have been well deserved IMO) it might have convinced him to stay, who knows? Just a shame that most of the voters couldn't see past Dunne, as per

Is this true?
I doubt very much we were able to offer him the kind nof cash Harry was throwing around at the time. Same goes for Cole and James. I thought his "reason" for leaving, had something to do with his wife missing France, which is why the fans turned on him, as he was obviously full of shit. Pompey were going nowhere just as fast as we were. He went for the money IMO.

Not true about the money iirc. He waited to see where City were going and, at the time, it looked like the answer was "nowhere" so he went to Newcastle, who did look to be going somewhere. That was a poor call as it turned out but none of us could have predicted this at the time.

he went to portsmouth
Newcastle, Portsmouth - what's the difference?

When Distin left he had three options stay with City, a 50 per cent increase to go to Pompey - no wonder they went bust and Liverpool who were offering less than City - Distin chose Pompey - so make your own mind up about his motives - great player but largely in it for the money (I'd guess) but you can't really blame him and he isn't alone in that.
