Russia are well pissed off and intend to send more weapons to the Assad government.

Folks, we have ourselves a proxy war.

Russia says it will go ahead with deliveries of S-300 anti-aircraft missiles to Syria, and that the arms will help deter foreign intervention.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the missiles were a "stabilising factor" that could dissuade "some hotheads" from entering the conflict.

Russia also criticised an EU decision not to renew an arms embargo on Syria.

Meanwhile, the BBC has heard evidence that 200 people were killed in a massacre in western Syria this month.

'We know what to do'

The S-300 is a highly capable surface-to-air missile system that, as well as targeting aircraft, also has the capacity to engage ballistic missiles.

It is broadly comparable to the US Patriot system which has been deployed by Nato to guard Turkish air space against attack, says BBC diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Marcus.

Mr Ryabkov said the contract for the missile systems had been signed several years ago.

"We consider these supplies a stabilising factor and believe such steps will deter some hotheads from considering scenarios that would turn the conflict international with the involvement of outside forces," he was quoted as telling journalists, in a coded reference to the use of Nato warplanes in Libya.

Mr Ryabkov added that the EU's decision not to renew its arms embargo on Syria would directly harm the prospects for a proposed peace conference next month.

Re: Syria: EU Lifts Embargo on Arms to Rebels

Isn't freedom and democracy just terrific, bet they're all rubbing their hands in anticipation of the $$$

Then a few years down the line when the realize the people they helped into power are not all super and rinse and repeat ad infinitum!

Re: Syria: EU Lifts Embargo on Arms to Rebels

You just know we're going to pay for all this meddling somewhere down the line.

Re: Syria: EU Lifts Embargo on Arms to Rebels

Pandora's box is about to be opened. Assad and his murderous crew need to be removed but supplying arms to a rag bag temporary coalition (my enemy's enemy and all that) is asking for trouble.

When the dust settles there'll be another civil war as the pro-Democracy factions and Christian minority get crushed by Islamists, Al-Qaeda, regional warlords, sundry criminals & etc. Did nobody learn from the Libyan situation after the overthrow of Gaddafi?

There seems to be such much in-fighting between the differing Muslim faiths in a lot of countries and especially in the middle east with the "Arab spring" the western governments are probably quite happy about it, behind closed doors of course wouldn't publicly admit that.

The Alawites are a small % of the population and were persecuted quite badly before the came to power and of course sought to repay said persecution. So can sort of understand why they're so desperate to hang on to power when they lose control and probably will, well you can imagine, it's not going to be a happy ending! Isn't religion just fanfuckingtastic!

The christian minority may already been slain

Pictures of hundreds of children slaughtered have been reported previosuly

Re: Syria: EU Lifts Embargo on Arms to Rebels

What can we do to change it?

I don't like the government of any country interfering with the civil unrest of another country.

It's complicated and any opinion on here probably counts for nothing.

I have taken advantage of being strangely unbanned at present to overrule the pearly queen, so you feel free to march mate.
It's another hornets nest with no easy solutions, so adding a shitload of guns into the mix could be just the thing to yield an amicable and lasting peaceful solution.

Re: Syria: EU Lifts Embargo on Arms to Rebels

This is one place we should steer well clear of. Hague seems to think he's some sort of Kissinger, without the intellect as he's for arming the rebels. I'm with all the others on here, of whatever political persuasion, it would be madness.

Re: Syria: EU Lifts Embargo on Arms to Rebels

Even more so than in Libya, where there was/is a similar danger imo, it is absolutely unbelievable that this country is actively supporting people that contain elements that are contrary to the 'on message' cause that we are told that we are supporting (i.e. democracy, human right, an open, liberal society).

What I find even stranger is that I don't think there is anyone who cannot see this danger. Yet it seems there is a policy of 'cross your fingers' that it all turns out ok.

Personally, I don't think that arming people just because they don't like someone you don't like and encouraging conflict is a policy that either a) can be easily defended, morally or b) has a history of long term success (think of all the cranks that have been armed by the West in the past, only to be (correctly or incorrectly) demonised later.

Hmmm.......just like they said Saddam had WMD.

The UN said a couple of weeks ago, it was the rebels who used chemical weapons to try to get the US to get involved. I believe them.

To get involved in this sectarian dispute would be absolute madness and I don't care if it's unpatriotic but if this starts some kind of war with Russia, then quite frankly I hope the US/UK is beaten and heavily. Although we were embarrassed and humiliated in Iraq, they still haven't learnt and maybe it will take something really terrible to make the Establishment change their ways. On this I hope Syria/Russia/China/Iran win the day!!
