I've no idea what our real motivation was (like fuck it was to purely to benefit the Syrian people) but arming and backing the rebels was hardly going to result in a quick resolution to the problem. It's just followed the pattern of countless other civil wars in the Middle East and Africa. 1 side backed by the West, the other backed by Russia, the moment one begins to get an upper hand the assistance floods in for the other side and we get a stalemate that benefits no-one and only results in death and destruction for the innocent, normal people caught in between.

It was a lose - lose situation from the start for everyone except those who make money from war.

This is a dangerous situation for Israel, at the moment they are sitting and watching and dont really want to get involved as their armed forces are not the Israeli army of 20 or 30 years ago when they were unbeatable, when i lived in Cyprus there were Israeli military personell training on Cyprus and British soldiers i knew said they were a shadow of their former selves, apparently drugs is a big issue in the Israeli army.
If we go in they might just go in, this will then escalate, the Iranians will come in on Assads side and the Iranians have a good well trained army and would be itching for a crack at Israel, it will then escalate even further with Lebanon and even Egypt fancying their chances and before you know it the whole Middle East will be at war, all because we want to stick our noses in.
I will say it again, leave it to the Arabs. they are well capable of sorting their own mess out

We have not armed any side since the civil war started
Assads regime bought military hardware of the UK years ago, but who hasnt bought off us?
The only time we have sent anything to help anybody in this war was a couple of months ago then it was to the so called rebels and it was non lethal hardware like night vision goggles and military radios, truth is we should not have even sent that.
The Russians like us will sell arms to anybody at the right time but apart from automatic weapons and hand held rocket launchers they have kept the Assad regime starved of heavy weight weapons otherwise the Assad regime would have crushed the jihadists by now, the Russians are clearly binding their time
