I would suggest that anyone doing that on even a moderately regular basis should talk to their line manager and not keep silent. If their line manager does nothing talk to the next person up the tree.Using Listen to the Taxman website the net monthly different between £50k and £42k is £500.
The one question I have, is it really an 8am-4pm job? No optional overtime, will you be working outside of these hours for free? I know plenty of people doing 9-5s and getting paid for those hours, but actually doing a lot more hours with no pay. Sounds like your current job you get paid for the hours you work.
It’s poor line management like this which normally leads to an increase in sickness and staff turnover. Stressed and disgruntled employees are also less productive. Recruitment costs are very expensive so keeping your staff content is of upmost importance. As a minimum they should get time off in lieu for extra hours worked.
Any job should be thought of as hourly rate vs (stress/hassle factor). The only contracts I know where they say you work the hours to do the job are those for director level roles and if you take one of those it needs to be accompanied with a six figure salary and big performance related bonuses.
