The first commercial night flight was made on the 22nd Feb 1921. It was part of a mail flight by the US postal service demonstrating the ability to fly mail across the entire continent. Previously the mail had traveled by train part of the way and the US government was thinking of cutting the funding for air mail. The pilots at the time used landmarks and road signs to navigate which of course they couldn't see at night so all the post offices along the route lit bonfires and flares to allow the pilot to find his way.
The pilots name was Jack Knight.
