Tell me to get/not get a Mac

I'd opt for a typewriter.

Save yourself 3-400 quid and get a laptop that will do exactly the same job. Get some decent anti-virus software... no viruses (by the way Macs do get viruses). Keep it clean... it will run fast enough.

It won't look as good but are you really that shallow?
The moment you said macs get viruses you lost all credibility because a growing number of the population now use macs and we know you don't.

What software do you use for making music?

I make music and I use both PC and Mac. Originally I used FL Studio and Reason, but then I won a Mac in a remix contest so I tried to make music on it.

To me, a Mac is worse than a PC for making music because the program I know inside out doesn't work on Mac, FL Studio.

I installed Logic (on the Mac), and whilst it looks like it's a great piece of software, I hated the workflow. I make music with alot of samples and I found that chopping these up was the biggest pain ever, so much so that I stopped making music althogether for a while, wheras in FL Studio it was a doddle.

However, my Mac has been more stable than my PC (actually, my motherboard just went on my PC and I replaced it yesterday), so if you've got cross-platform software like Reason, then I'd say go for a Mac.

Now that I've got my PC up and running again I will be switching back over to PC for music once I've installed my SSD.

In terms of day-to-day stuff like browsing the web and email etc I'd say my experience has been better on Mac simply because it's crashed twice, and not to the extent that it shuts down, unlike my PC that always finds some reason to shut down.

In terms of operating system, I'd say the easiest to use/ most eye-pleasing would be OSX, but because I know Windows inside out, I still like knowing where everything is, but I don't with Mac (but that is entirely my fault as I haven't learnt the ins and outs of OSX). However, Windows is definitely more tweakable and more open to the user, whereas OSX is alot more closed off.

Overall, I don't really know which one you should go for. If you're savvy with PCs and don't mind tinkering with the OS when it goes wrong and don't mind doing maintenance, I'd say get a PC and save yourself a few hundred quid. If you can't be bothered with all that, get a Mac.

A no-brainer for a student soap dodger.

You have 850 quid. You need a computer for music stuff and general lectures. Why spend all of the cash if a normal laptop will do the same job?

Get a laptop for 400 odd quid, pocket the rest. Simple.

phishing malware is not a virus mate and you know it.
No, it isn't but do you think the average user really cares about semantics and the technicalities of what malware is designed to do, or do they care whether they have malware, of any kind, on their system? Handing over your card details on false pretences can still really fuck up your day even though it's not a virus. I thought you Mac advocates were all about the average user. Stop being a fanboy for every minute of your life for a change.

Still need some common sense though, apparently.
