Pato stuns PSG: "I’m staying at Milan"
Tevez, talks with City cut short
Milano, 12 January 2012
Galliani flew back from London after the Brazilian refused to join PSG. But, from France, Leo says: "I’m still optimistic about signing him”. The offer from the French club: €28 million plus €7 million to Milan depending on various targets, and a 3-year deal worth between €6-€7 million a season to the player
The deal had looked done: Pato to join PSG and Tevez to join Milan. But half way through the afternoon everything changed and was turned on its head: Pato stunned PSG, releasing a statement on the official Milan website: "I’m staying at Milan." It forced Milan’s CEO Adriano Galliani to call off talks in London with City for Tevez. And in Paris, where everyone had though the deal to sign Pato was complete, they were left with nothing. Or rather, they were left with a final offer by Leonardo to the Rossoneri, which had been knocked together over a one-hour lunch break: €28 million plus up to €7 million in bonuses should the player achieve various targets, with a 3-year deal to Pato, worth between an estimated €6-€7 million a season. This is how the events of the action-packed day unfolded.
Pato — After lunch, Pato came within a whisker of officially becoming a PSG player. The Sporting Director of the club, Leonardo, had tabled an improved bid totalling €35 million (€28 immediately, with a possible total of €7 million in bonuses), a higher bid than the €28 million offered previously. At that point, even L'Equipe, made an announcement on their website , quoting sources close to PSG and confirming a deal between the two clubs has been reached.
Leonardo: "I’m an optimist by nature, but I don’t think we will sign Pato by this weekend"
At around 3pm, further indication came from Paris that the deal had hit a snag, when Leonardo himself, during the Press Conference announcing the signing of Maxwell by PSG. "I’m optimistic by nature,” Leo said, “But I doubt we'll be able to sign Pato by this weekend. Talks are still progressing and there's still a chance we can sign him. We’ll see. There’s plenty of time left.” But, an hour later, at around 4.30pm, PSG were stunned when Milan published the following statement on their official website: "Alexandre Pato is staying at Milan. The forward has decided to continue his fledgling, splendid and already successful career with the Rossoneri. Pato made the announcement as follows: “The club is my home. I didn’t want to interrupt my Rossoneri career after winning my first two trophies with Milan. I want to continue to contribute to writing the history of Milan and look forward to future successes of the club with happiness and in perfect harmony with everyone here. This joy will give me the will to face all future matches with added enthusiasm as well as a will to win and score more goals. Today is a special day for me. I want to thank President Berlusconi, the club and the fans who have always believed in me."

Tevez — The day for Carlitos Tevez and Adriano Galliani in England started at 10.01am, when Milan officials flew to the UK. Milan’s lawyer Leandro Cantamessa and FIFA Agent Giuseppe Riso were both with Galliani. They flew from the private airfield at ATA and touched down at Luton, with a new offer to put to City: the loan, for free, of the forward this season, with a €25 million move plus €3 million in bonuses, to be completed for next season. In an office in Marylebone, London, just before 2pm, the club officials from Milan sat down with club officials from City. City were represented by John McBeath and Brian Marwood. Everything looked set for the player to sign for Milan, especially with the money in the bank from the Pato/PSG move, so much so that back in Milan, Inter President Massimo Moratti told reporters: "I really do think Tevez will join Milan now." But, just as the deal was about to be struck, the almost 3-hours of talks were interrupted by the news that Pato had turned down the move to PSG. At that point, Galliani bid his farewells and put a stop to the deal. But it is just a simple “good bye” or a more definitive “farewell”? It’s tough to say at the moment. Talks between Milan and City are on hold. And, for the time being, the best offer on the table for Tevez is the one from Inter.
