That Sikh copper

A solution is closer to being found. Last year West Midlands Police spent £100,000 trying to find protective headgear for one Sikh officer who applied to join the counter-terrorist Operational Support Unit. With that sort of money being thrown at the problem it should be sorted by now.

If you look beyond the headlines you'll see that the turban issue is a red herring. Most people don't read the full story like you said locoblu and so the misleading headline is all that gets remembered. It looks like this guy won his case because he was bullied and harrassed - not because of any foolish turban issue.

I remember reading some research a while back which looked at half a dozen of the most famous "politically correct" stories over the last few years, and discovered that on the whole they weren't true.

We know on this site all about Talk Sport and how they say crap just to get us annoyed so we'll phone in. This is just the same - if the local news run a headline about the guy getting compensation because he wasn't allowed to wear a turban in a riot then you'll stay tuned in. If they present it more truthfully, that it's just another dull story about someone being bullied by their boss, then you'll probably watch Hollyoaks instead.

Agree 100%.
Sloppy sensationalist tabloid journalism designed to provoke a reaction amongst the hard-of-thinking Daily Fail readership.
As to the poster who suggested that the man in question only joined the police for the compensation, words fail me.
Though I do question why he would join a racist organisation in the first place.

When l joined the Fire Service, 'initiation ceremonies' were rife, my own consisted of being stripped nekid, my parts lathered in axle grease and suspended 30ft in the air with my ankles tied, upside down from the Turntable ladder and hosed down with pressurised cold water from the hose reel, fuck ,it stung.

All good fun and afterwards l felt accepted and part of the Watch.

Not long after a female Firefighter rocked up and made a big point of saying she wanted to treated as 'one of the lads'.

So we lashed her to a pillar under the covered wash, fully clothed and gave her a bit of a wetting, very tame.

She didn't appear the next day, took it to an industrial tribunal and trousered 80k 'for being bullied, harassed and degraded' ,she was only with us for a day.....

£10,000 payout for turban row Pc

A Sikh policeman has been awarded £10,000 in compensation after he was ordered to remove his turban for riot training by Greater Manchester Police.

An employment tribunal ruled Gurmeal Singh, 31, had been subject to "indirect discrimination" and harassment.

The tribunal had been told a sergeant asked Pc Singh: "Can you take that thing off?"

Judge Murray Creed said this was a "violation" of his "dignity".

He was awarded £3,500 for indirect discrimination and £6,500 for harassment after suffering psychological damage, injury to feelings and personal injury, the tribunal ruled.

The officer, who joined Greater Manchester Police in 2004, is a baptised and practising Sikh and it is against his religion to remove his turban in public or modify it.

He said he suffered panic attacks, stress and palpitations and had to go off sick from work over the issue during a long-running dispute with his employers.

Out of the officer's 15 grievances, two were ruled in his favour: Harassment from a superior and "indirect discrimination" because the rules around the riot training lacked "clarity".

Nijinski did I say anything that was remotely racist ? also the cynical side of me comes from age and experience but also from some of the ball bags who try and screw my wifes business for compo when they fail to come near the requirements of their contract and find after many warnings that they no longer have a job, one person was interviewed and told she had the job as assistant manager, she looked the Bee`s Knee`s on paper and in person, come the monday she was due to start it was a no show, no call no nothing, thursday `WE` made contact with her, i wo`nt bore you with details but after a bit of `debate` my wife agreed for her to start the following monday, this was a lot to ask considering her business turns over easily half a mill a year and she has 27 other staff to consider. Following monday no show again, no call no nothing, eventually she answers my wifes calls, by this time my wife had employed her second choice for the job, who after 4 years is still there and doing great stuff, the person who did`nt show up took my wife to an industrial tribunal on the grounds that she was told she had the job in the first place, I`m very bitter about this because my wife is very passionate and supportive of her staff and takes things very personally, she had a breakdown over it, it also cost me ten grand in lost earnings while I helped my wife back to health, she was a mess, there are bastards all over the place wanting something for nothing and do`nt give a shit how much it hits hard working `honest` people, so now I would ask you to see ALL sides of the argument. Now fair enough, you can't make him remove it i'll agree with that.

But why the fuck sign up for riot training, which im sure everyone knows includes wearing a helmet for protection. Plus, panic attacks? Get a grip you fucking pansy.

Maybe the daily mail lovers need to look at the story in depth rather than the headlines.

Of course the government and GMP have only themselves to blame. In their eagerness to fill quotas, people who are patently not up to it are slipping through the net.

The country has the police force it deserves.

In some ways this confuses my leftie views. The police don't look or act like the big shit kicking facist bastards i know and love anymore.

With merciless brutality. I 've seen taxi drivers beaten with a pace stick by a single Indian policeman dressed more like a British army officer, for crowding the end of a ship's gangway as people left the ship. They don't f**k about, they don't get stressed, and they don't have panic attacks and bleat about religion. They get the job done.
