Two of the terms used in this thread to describe a player whose ability never made him anything more than a good Premier League player.

There are at least 20 European players (and that is being extemely generous to Beckham, I'd say more like a couple of hundred at least, myself) that every person on Earth would acknowledge as being better than Beckham and part of the same generation. If we are basing it on only footballing ability, of course.

This man is being picked for England by a manager who tells everyone he only picks people on form and tries to make his reputation on that. Yet he has not done anything of any note whatsoever in a league of any quality for at least 4 years. He plays in a pub league most of the year and then when he goes to a decent league he is woeful (and he was last year), unlike players like Donaovan who have something to offer.

If that doesn't tell you that his whole reputation is based on hype, then what will.

We are even now being told that the role of a 'supersub' is to be a one paced player with no tricks, no engine left and no attributes associated with being an impact player. No, now, just to suit the 'Becks to the world cup' bandwagon, we have the role redefined to "someone who might be able to put a cross in"!

Laughable.

He takes a corner. It is reported as a Beckham assist and discussed for days. Anyone else takes one that results in a goal and it is barely acknowledged as it is a run of the mill event.

Not to mention that he has been dross in every tournament he has been to, apart from possibly France 98.

You can also see on this thread someone buying into the carefully constructed image that Beckham has tried to create over the last few years and claiming 'he seems to be the only one that cares about England'. Absolute shite but something he has strived to create (to ensure his selection) by always spouting meaningless soundbites on the subject, clenching his fist a few times, crying at the right time and always being first on the scene to get on the TV when a goal is scored.

And just so no-one thinks this is a rag thing. Paul Scholes is a far, far, far, superior player to this bloke. In fact, he has been on another planet. If there was any justice then the idiots that fawn over Beckham's every move would be waxing lyrical about Scholes' ability. (And Giggs for that matter)

JMA and Eds..... Sum it up very well between him.

In his peak, he was a good Premier League footballer, but nothing more. In the midfield he played in at Man Utd, out of Scholes, Giggs, and Keane, he was probably the worst out of those 4. Theres no shame in that, but it shows his ability wasn't what it was made out to be. In football, terms such as "legend" and "world class" are thrown around too easily these days, and he is not one. Has he lit up a major tournament? Only really France 98, and he then screwed it up by being stupidly sent off. He's been lucky to be surrounded by world class footballers, for both United, and Real.

He's our 2018 "Ambassador" and must beat shiltons records to become the bestest engerland player ever.
 
Must admit he looked their best player when he came on, could still do a job for England IMO.

He should definitely be left at home. Been arguing this point with mates for the last six months. He offers nothing except for the occasional set piece. He's slow, clumsy in the tackle and is the most one-footed player since Davor Suker. However, he's managed to hoodwink a nation into thinking that whilst he's clearly not very good, he should still be on the plane to South Africa! Testiment that PR is as important as ability in this day and age. I just hope Capello can see through it.
