...as an American who is unfamiliar with the inner-workings of the British political machine, could someone enlighten me as to why Margaret Thatcher stirs such disdain among so many?...

Closing the coal mine's( costing thousand's of people their jobs), she privatisted council houses now there's a lack of council houses in the UK, she stopped free milk at schools, she caused the poll tax riots, she she sold British Rail and British Telecom.
