The 2025 Rebuild of City Squad

View attachment 155891

Cambiasso, Reijnders, Wesley, MGW and a GK or two in.

KDB, Grealish, Bernardo, Walker all out.

We’ll have too many centre halves but 3 of them can’t stay fit anyway. Not sure how this puts us for the HG situation, but anyway, just based off the names we’ve been linked with and for fun.

I think we’d win the league.
Missing Bobb, Echeverri too, think one or both of them could impact next season, even if only off the bench.

I love these lists - how do we as fans know that City didn’t move for these players ?
( no links in the papers etc )
But it could be a quick conversation with their agent and we are told he’s not interested going elsewhere
There are only so many players that can improve the top clubs and almost certainly the majority of these clubs will be in for them

Sense.
Less of it !

Interested to see how you think the squad could look but look at the current links it’s starting to be come more clear who our targets are at least. Based on them what a great position the squad would be in if the below happened:(Bold is Homegrown)

In’s: Cambiasso, Costa, MGW, Reijnders, Rodrygo - total £350m

Out’s: Bernardo, Walker, Ederson, Grealish, KDB, Stones, Nunes - realistically probably less than £100m so a net of 250ish million.

GK: Ortega, Costa, Carson
RB: Lewis, Cambiasso
LB: O’Reilly, Ake,
CB: Dias, Gvardiol, Khusanov, Akanji, Reis

CM: Rodri, Nico, Reijnders, Gundogan, Kovacic
CAM: MGW, Foden

LW: Marmoush, Doku,
ST: Haaland,
RW: Savinho, Rodrygo, Bobb

Judging by that, we have a 25 man squad, with only 7 homegrown spots. I don’t believe Reis will count as a foreign player due to his age but I could be wrong.

Can’t help but feel Akanji may end up going to Saudi or somewhere for a big money move and we move in the homegrown market there. Kovacic and Gundo staying could also be unlikely too.

Personally would like to see something similar to the treble winning season perhaps O'Reilly inverting from LB into the middle with Rodri if Reijnders isn't signed.

Absolute mega team if somehow we get Elon Musk in and sign Reijnders, MGW and Wirtz

I desperately want to get excited about this squad rebuild but the evidence we have seen so far does not fill me with any confidence at all.

I’m starting to wonder if Pep even gets consulted for his opinion before we go out and sign players because the players we have signed the last couple of years don’t appear to be players that he rates.

I’ve had a theory for a while that one of the reasons for the poor season has been because pep doesn’t have the players to suit the way that pep wants to play and that players that the club have bought over the last few years don’t suit his way of playing. This has meant that time after time he went back to the players he believes can play the way he wants, the old guard.

Look at the January signings we bought two young centre backs who don’t even make the bench when stones and Ake are still injured. If pep doesn’t think they are good enough for the bench when players are injured is he likely to want them as part of his rebuild next season? Then there is Nico on paper he is supposed to be the archetypal pep player, he was at La Masia, but when our midfield is being run through at fun he still doesn’t get any game time and Rodri isn’t back yet. Marmoush is the only one to get meaningful game time but even then I’m not convinced that pep is fully sold on him.

The year before we signed Nunes to play centre midfield only for pep to come out and say he can’t play there. It seems to happen so often now.

A previous poster listed what felt like the entire PSG team basically saying that they were all gettable, I agree but for some reason we ended up signing players our own manager doesn’t rate. There looks to be a disconnect in my opinion.

Just because a random poster on here says that they were gettable, doesn't necessarily mean that they were.

Win which league ?

Rodrygo isn't needed. He's just a name, which is seemingly what some of our fans think we just need, regardless of position.
A name who’s WC, won’t trophies, big game player, plays forward, technical, a hard worker. Can’t tell you how slow this team is, players wait too long to pass the ball forwards. If that isn’t enough for you lot. He knows how to make runs into the box and shoot. Our wingers combined in all comps don’t get his g/a. Lemme say that again. Grealish, Savio, Doku, Bobb in their last 2 years do not match his g/a in one season. We’re not getting Wirtz and the club won’t spend big on Baleba. Can they give us something to be excited about ?

Savio got more goals and assists than Rodrygo in La Liga last season in a much weaker team and he’s three years younger than him, too

Nope. Our drawing power is limited to the quality of supply. City are trying to replace world class players with ones who aren't available.
Not sure I fully buy in to this thinking Tolm, as the implications would be much wider and impact the current squad. I don't see players like Haaland committing to contracts without having assurances the club match their ambition (the so called 'project'). We simply cannot afford not to go after world class players, as we run the risk of losing the ones we have. In my opinion, we absolutely have to go after players like Wirtz etc.

What's the evidence we are going to get a squad rebuild?

A couple of obvious ins and out but thinking we are have a full clear out is a pipe dream no?

My outgoing list is close to 10 because I strongly believe that Pep will play the old players no matter who we sign. Case en point Nico G still holding bench behind Gundo and Bernardo. I am getting sick of Pep but we still need him/rep to sign players and win more trophies.
I've definitely been here, and feel this often. But Pep agreed to an extension, as I understand, somewhat because he didn't want to walk away with city in crisis. Even if he felt like the uncs gave the best chance at winning next year, he's got to know they won't be the year after. He has to move on from his favorites, or why is he staying? At least that's what I tell myself to lift myself from the despair of this season

That's the second time in two days I've seen this written on here.
What are "uncs"?

He doesn’t feel that and he’s said publicly he doesn’t so don’t why some posters keep repeating almost daily that he would play the older players next season.

The issue is who is world class that is looking to move? If you look across the four semi finalists in the CL who were the outstanding players? Now how many of them are realistic options?

As others have said, that PSG side has a fair few we could and should have bought already.

You can widen the pool and look at QF teams too. There is a big pool of inconsistent players and I think it's also revealing how a player like Savinho with so much promise and a great season last campaign has struggled in England. He is so young but I think we have to now look at younger players who in time can help us hit the levels we expect. It might mean our inconsistent form remains for another year or so, but puts us in a stronger position after that.
